Best tire for spread axle flatbed.

If you have a dump on your rear axle just about any tire will do fine on a spread. When I was hauling cattle I’d run Firestone or BFG on the trailer I was pulling. New shocks and alignment when you put the tires on, dump the back axle on every turn, and you’re good to go.

 

Goodyear G619 is the GY recommendation for spread.

I put a new set on the trailer I just sold - see how they go. Tire place said guys were happy with them so far.

 

We run Goodyear G619s too. I like them, but I like those Generals better.

 

Probably my cheapest per mile tires for my spread would be the el cheapo Transeagle. Deep tread hard straight rib. Lasted around 75k frt axle, around 95k rear axle.
Had good luck with kelly armoursteel. Lasted about the same, but cost a bit more.
Recap only grade A casings with Bandag BTL-SA tread. It's a really rounded profile tread that so far beats everything for cost and longevity. Don't let the tire guy sell you on a recap for a spread axle unless it's a really quality, preferably steer, casing and the BTL-SA tread. Otherwise, you will be sorry. For reference, using my casings, I'm paying $174 inc tax, cash and carry for the capping.

Pretty much. You dump the air in the rear, so all the weight is in the front. Now the rear tires are only scrubbing with the weight of the axle and tires, instead of the trailer and load. Far easier on them. It also makes the trailer more predictable, because it's no longer trying to decide which axle it feels like pivoting on for the next two feet before it changes it's mind again. And it also basically turns your trailer into a 38 footer when it comes to maneuverability. Makes it very nimble. Only two downsides I can think of are you now have ten feet of tail swing to keep track of, and you can drive 25 miles at 70mph with 51k on the trailer when you look down and realize it's still dumped...like I did.

 

What is the low speed rear dump option I’m looking at a new trailer with it not actually sure how it works

 

when you get over a set mph it puts the air back in the dumped axle/ might be 5 or 10 mph

 

They make tires specifically for spread axle. I was told any steer tire is the best to use. Haven't done it myself.

 

That'd be handy. I'll have to look into that on my next trailer purchase. My 45' spread is about done. Going to need a new one in 2022.
