Alright guys... I'm starting at Swift in Memphis, TN next Monday, Oct 19th. I'm sure most of you that have worked for Swift know that you have to complete their online CDL training sessions before you are able to leave to the academy.
I was told by my recruiter that I had to complete "Section 9" through the online CDL training, which happens to be "Hazardous Materials", along with the other sections as well. Now, I know that HAZMAT is OPTIONAL when getting the CDL. I asked the recruiter what I would need to pass at the academy, and was told just the classroom tests and w/e is needed to pass when I go to the DMV, which is just the standard 3 endorsements (I do have my Class A Permit already, since they require it).
My question is... When I get to the academy, what will be required to pass (which tests in the classroom)? I'm not very knowledgable on HAZMAT, and I didn't want to have go through learning about it if I didn't need it, but if I need to know it to pass it in-class, I guess I'll just have to pick it up before then. Can anyone give me any info on this subject? Thanks!

In my opinion.. knowledge is power. I've always been one for education so I learned about hazmat even though I have no intentions of using it or getting my endorsement. It still helps to know about it when you're out there so you'll know what the rules are of other trucks. If you're running swift, they run some hazmat loads i'm sure. Couldn't hurt to study up on it and get the endorsement anyhow.
zotoa Thanks this. -
hey ssccrab, I'll be seeing ya at the academy, about the hazmat, i went and passed my hazmat test on the second attempt at the dmv without reading the hazmat book. it's not that bad. alot of common sense stuff. the wrong answers from the first attempt i studied in order to learn what i needed to pass it the second time around. a few of the same questions i missed the first time came back up. so don't fret, it ain't that bad, the expense is gonna be running the background check, i believe that's about a hundred bucks. and there changing something there to. must be renewed every three years, instead of 4 as it has been.

All company's will require a basic knowledge of hazmat regs, even if you do not get the endorsement.
This is a DOT requirement.
You may have limited quantities of hazmat in loads you haul. Even without the endorsement, just it will not be a quantity that needs placards.zotoa Thanks this. -
ssccrab, I'll see you there next Monday. I completed all of the "on line" courses just because I wanted to... The HAZMAT put me to sleep... I live a few miles north of Millington, I went down to see my recruiter, she told me it is now mandatory to take all of the "on line" test prior to class. She didn't elaborate any further in regard to taking the tests in class. I plan on taking the test at the DMV just to get ahead... See you next week...

Good luck, they are trying to work me into the training on the 26th! I took and passed every test the State of Florida offered. Hopefully, the company will not be as bad as I have read on this board, and I can survive a year. If it is, oh well, it beats unemployment.

good luck guys on your test and school.

They will hand you a book on day 1 of the class and it will have every single answer in it for the tests.
READ THE BOOK. I cannot stress this enough. If you go into the class and expect the tests to teach you everything, you will be retaking the test again. Read the book 20 times if you have to, you will be glad that you did.zotoa Thanks this. -
Also, the hazmat training is extremely basic, and you probably will not see more than 5 questions (if any) on the test.

Thank you for the replies/responses guys. I hadn't thought of it in those ways until you had all said something. Very helpful information!
However... I have a huge problem now... Be looking for a new thread by me in "Q's From New Drivers"...
