Have a question about cam timing on a series 60 Detroit. What would happen if the cam were off by one tooth? Serious question, I’m not sure if it is or not, but wondering it it is what would the engine run like? I’ve not come across this before hence the question. Thanks in advance.

Happened to my neighbor. Truck still ran, but not great. Bent valves, had to replace head. 2nd Mechanic noticed it somehow. Must have been after head was off. Not sure. Can’t remember the whole story. Either way, he saw the timing marks were off without taking the front covers off. I can call the Mechanic and ask, if you don’t find any more info.

This will not be a popular opinion. But they will run one tooth off, no damage. It might not run well, but will run. It is very difficult to jump a tooth, unless the front gear train was disassembled or its worn out. Not using a cam gear holding tool to change diamond seal, or cam would be next to impossible to get it out of time. I understand the book does not agree with this, just my opinion. If it bent valves? Its more than 1 tooth off.
swaan, QUALITYTRUCK, spsauerland and 1 other person Thank this. -

There is a procedure to measure the timing. You need a dial indicator and you need to know the spec for your engine which is in repair manual it's not that big a job. I have seen them run a tooth out and not run well just be sluggish. I have seen them run a tooth out and smoke as well as be hard to start. Depends on which way its out

Never seen slightly bent valves. Changed thousands of diamond seals and cams without a holding tool. Cam has a dowl that goes into thrust plate. Only one way. Unless you miss it and crush the hollow dowl pin in the cam while tighting cam gear. Which that causes the back cam cap to break into pieces.
Yes I did it once, that how I know this.
If its out of time, the gear train is worn out, or assembled wrong.spsauerland and Rideandrepair Thank this. -

So, turns out it was the fuel pump! The day before he had just had the head gasket done and he thought it was out of time as it just happened right after that. Go figure!
jamespmack Thanks this.
