I should add:
I worked with techs that only replaced clutches by putting them on the input shaft and bolting them to
the flywheel after bolting the transmission in place. There was never a problem with this method.
Its probably easier if your doing it without a helper.

If you can rig it up with the jack that would be a great back saver.
I have never seen a clutch not assembled properly from the manufacturer. Just verify the exposed disc says flywheel side on it.650cat425, Dino soar, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
If you put the pilot bearing in the flywheel you will be able to use the pilot shaft and jack to
set the flywheel in place as well.650cat425, Rideandrepair and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -
Boy I sure have, and check everyone!650cat425, Rideandrepair, God prefers Diesels and 1 other person Thank this. -
Before you stab it in, make sure your install shaft slides in and out like butter. Put little bit of grease on pilot bearing area of shaft and end of splines. Slip it back and out. Look in hole with a light. If its going all the way, you will see grease impression of spline ends on pilot bearing your good. If not start over, disc's aint lined up.
The lock trans in gear so you can spin yoke as you push it in.650cat425, Dino soar, Rideandrepair and 5 others Thank this. -

I'm done for the night. I forgot to tell you guys the clutch doesn't need opened up. I can see where they labelled the side I can see as "intermediate plate". So it's good. Not a very productive day today, but I did manage to waste a bunch of diesel making multiple trips to town. Got the new input shaft on the tranny, and took the old clutch off the flywheel. Couldn't get the flywheel off, so I went to town a second time for a 3/4" gun. Got home, and didn't have an air fitting that would fit it, and I wasn't about to go to town a third time, so I packed it in for the night.
The input shaft welded to the jack worked perfect. I welded the upright to the jack, slid the input shaft into the clutch on the engine, and then tacked it to the upright. Then I dragged the jack out from under the truck and welded it up.
