oh and he can't do Canada because of a felony.

More than likely he won't get a job anywhere with a felony

You'll be surprised at the number of trucking company employees that, after even a year on the road, don't understand hours of service, how to log time correctly, or how to use an atlas.

I feel sorry for them, somewhat, but know that you'll get the job done when they can't. You're probably going to play "Captain Save-A-Load" and repower some of these guy's loads after they screw up due to poor trip planning or just plain stupidity.

After you've rescued some loads and your driver manager sees how competent you are, it only goes to serve that you get some preferential treatment, and you SHOULD.

If you can't trust some of these lobotomites to get the job done, they have to keepthem on a very short leash..and if they can trust you, they let you run as hard as you want. That's the way this business works. heck, that's the way ANY business works.

Good luck on your company decision, there's good and bad with every company out there...the only negative I've heard about Werner was from morons who couldn't figure out electronic logging and got stranded without hours....it's actually pretty easy, and I got spoiled...except for being in a slow truck.

I'll second on BuilderBob's comment about your classmate with a felony...he's probably completely wasting his time and money going to school - depending on the nature of the felony and how long ago it occured, it's very likely he won't get a job at all. PERIOD.

No offense to the felon in question, or anyone who knows one, but from a trucking company perspective, and their insurance company, can you imagine tellling your agent that you're allowing a known, convicted criminal to not only drive your $100,000 truck with complete freedom, but to transport other people's property? Property that can easily exceed $100,000, and sometimes approach a million dollars?

CR England hires felons, mainly because they keep their people on a tight leash, keep them broke, etc...there were two guys with felonies in my orientation. I would think that by having people NET $100-200 a week after running 3,000 miles, it would make them want to commit crimes MORE, since they're desperate!

Don't expect to make any money. You are an indentured servant for your first year.

He's right - I netted 21 cents per mile - $23k in 109,000 miles. Most solo guys will do that in a little under a year, I was teaming with a trainee, and then my wife, for 5 of 6 months. That income was for both me and my wife.
