I'm in the market for a Tractor and It's between a 2014 Freightliner DD13 W/ 430k Miles for $37K or 2014 Volvo W/ 589K Miles for $27K. No major work on either has been done.
1. What's your experience with these engines?
2. What should I look out for when buying a tractor?
3. Is there any "hidden" fees? Exhaust system upgrades for emissions or Auxiliary components that need to be added after the purchase in order to hit the road?

I like the DD engines , the DD13 is more fuel efficient than DD15 . I would pull a DDEC report off the computer , also have the def systems hooked up to computer and run it thru a regen . You will also find out how much filter life is left once you run it through regen and the tech can pull the stats . Idle time is important , a truck with out apu is gonna have high idle hrs and is considered severe duty and should have had frequent pm service do to the added run time . Oil samples dyno if possible. Oil psi should be at 50 psi or above at 1500 rpms around 65mph give or take . Check color of coolant resivoir for any discoloration , oil or soot in Reservoir means blown egr cooler or oil cooler.
Basically have it thoroughly gone through and even than you could hit a brick wall months later .John.doe0289 Thanks this. -
I'm a Volvo fan and love my 2015 D13 (780) but in your shoes I'd probably go for the Freightliner if the rest of the truck is what you're looking for. Volvos can need Volvo dealer specific maintenance and you might want to live close to a good dealer or shop who can work on it.
That said, mine has never put me on the side of the road in 300k miles. I'm at 832k on mine and running like a champ. Just regular maintenance. None of these trucks are maintenance free. -
Considering both are getting close to needing some pricy emission system maintenance, the Volvo for $10k less looks pretty tempting. This is assuming both trucks are in similar mechanical condition.
That's just my $0.02 though.Coffey, John.doe0289 and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
If the Volvo has not had injector cups at 589k it’s probably not far from needing them. Which isn’t a huge deal, especially if you use a reputable shop that isn’t a dealer. But something to consider. Either one are to the point the emissions systems could be really problematic especially if they haven’t been maintained correctly. I personally lean Volvo, I’ve always had better luck with them than the DD’s myself. But whichever you choose make sure you have it thoroughly gone thru, oil samples, dyno etc. And be prepared for a potential pricy repair regardless
John.doe0289 and 86scotty Thank this. -
If this helps my Volvo still hasn’t had injectors or cups at 830k. It has an APU and I don’t idle it ever for more than 30 minutes.

Sorry @86scotty86scotty Thanks this. -
Coffey Thanks this.

I could see the DD13 being better if you're mostly light but if you carry heavy a lot I think the DD15 strains less and does better.danny23tx Thanks this.
