Is DOFT considered a good load board ?? These are the rates I've been following. I have a friend that has access to DAT and will work with me. DAT is expensive so I would think it is much better ???

I don't know what DOFT is. The majority of people here and everywhere who run OTR are on DAT. It's my main squeeze and I use Truckstop some. DAT's rates just went up I think, or at least mine did. I've been meaning to call them.
For a couple years I was paying $35/month for DAT. That's a tiny cost in this business. $235 would still be a minor cost! -

You can sign up as a carrier with most of the big brokerages like Schneider, JBHunt, Landstar and so many more and use their free load boards. There are decent loads that pay well there. Lots of us here use them.

Na, you can just register as a carrier. Their board isn't very good though. I get more good Landstar loads off DAT than I ever have from their board. But, all Landstar agents are not created equal. In fact, most are crooks. If they speak very broken English most (not all but most) are just agents double brokering crap loads. Beware of those.
Tuckster Thanks this. -

You could lease on to a carrier and work month on month off. On the months you take off tell em to suspend insurance. But it has to be a full month off afaik

On flip side if you live out west somewhere the insurance rates might not be that bad for your own MC.
