Just wanted to say hi to everyone here at the forums and do a formal introduction. A little about myself to start off, got married at the age of 18... had two kids by then. I joined the army at the age of 21. Been in for a total of 5 years and have about a year and a half left. I can’t stand the 12 and 15 month deployments and the VERY structured life style anymore. It would be a lot different if there were 6 month deployments.. I am currently in Iraq, wife left me after 8 years and I’m looking into getting into trucking OTR. My father drove truck most of my childhood. Mother currently drives for Tyson foods. She runs national for them. But enough about my past, I’m looking forward to the future. So here are a few questions for the seasoned truckers I’m leaning toward Crete as someone I would like to drive for but one issue I have is in 2008 I got into some trouble with the law. the charge was a felony but I was able to get it down to misdemeanor larceny. Does anyone think this will affect my ability to get into a trucking company? I think I have 2 speeding tickets in the past 6 years but if I’m good I can pass the three year mark and they should be off my record I think. On the good side though I have been employed by the army for 6 years, two tours of Iraq under my belt and I have a secret clearance for the next couple years after I get out. Hope to make plenty of friends on here and tell everyone my journey from army to the trucking life over the next year or so. If any of you have any advice feel free to hit me up. I’m laid back and easy to talk to. :biggrin_255:

    bigdaddyc,

First, thanks for your service. There are those of us who thank you guys every day for the sacrifices you make.

i know who want to hear from those with experience...but I can tell you from my extensive research over the past 2-3 months and talking with others...the larceny charge will very likely be a deal breaker.

Just last week, I was trying to help a guy I was trying to team with and I called the recruiter on his behalf to discuss his misdemeanor larceny charge from 1997. "There are misdemeanor charges we will overlook but larceny is not one of them" were the exact words of the recruiter. This was a guy who got his life straightened out, went to college and graduated a major university with a 4 year degree and still a total no go.

Now, with that said, she also said, that things change all the time. But with the economy being what it is, you'd probably be shut out if you were trying to hire on right now. in a year and a half, things may be totally different.

now my friend i thank you for your sevice firstand formost.

as far as employment the econamy is bad and a lot of drivers are out of work the market is literaly flooded with drivers looking for a job that why all these companys have so many stupid requirments , when the econamy levels out and more and more get back to work these same companys will find themselves looking for drivers and when they cant find them amazingly all those ridiculess requirments disapear.

does that mean you wont be abel to work? no it does not . get your cdl and forget about the big companys if you find thats a problem .

look for an independent or an owner operator they dont have those rediculess requirments and by the way those requirments are not law its just a stupid company and maybe an insurace company just trying to make things worse.

BUT you can still drive it just a little harsder finding a job.

best of luck to you my friend.---southernpride

Echoing everybody else here, thanks. It's good to see folks like you and others here that are serious about entering the trade even though you know it's not gonna be easy.

Personally, I've grown very tired of the "steering wheel holders" and the "I'm doing this until I can get a real job again" crowd. I'm sick to death of the trash-mouth 30 day wonders who denigrate the profession (yes I said profession) that I've worked most of my adult life at. I don't train because I won't put up with the "close enough" attitude. Anyone I've trained knows what they're doing before they get released and I do not cut slack because of gender or skin color or anything else.

    Kitty,
It is so nice to hear from one who's not whiney and expects things done right. Glad to soon be numbered among the pro's.

From one Vet to another, I salute your service. Looks like you ETS'd out of Ft. Hood? That's my last post too. Glad you're home in one piece, bro!

Pretty good advice from the other guys. I'd also consider using your 5 point Vet preference and apply for any Govt jobs on their USAJOBS job site. Your County Veterans Affairs office can be of help too. Use them, it's there for YOU. You also might consider joining AmVets, VFW, etc., or any other Vet's orginizations that will help you with networking with folks that hold Vets in a higher regard than most other folks do. If you've got some extra time on your hands, voluteer at the VA Hospital. I did vlunteer work there between jobs and met some pretty great people, both Vets and civilian folks that turned me on to some good leads, ideas and new friends. You definetly earned your combat vet status, don't be too modest NOT to use it to your advantage. Best of luck to you!

ust wanted to thank everyone for there info. I kinda figured the charge would be a breaker but I also have family in the business so my mom said she has lots of o/o that would let me drive for them and some small company's also that would take me under there wing. I'm hopeful that everything will work out good. Just studying the TX cdl book now till I get back. Anyone know of a good college or school to go to in TX or MI. The GI Bill is going to pay for it all so no worries about price.
