Is a 9 speed a good otr truck?

    I started out in Cornbinder cabover with a nine speed. Drove all over the country and it got the job done.

    Never have driven a 15, or a Super 10.

    I preferred the 18 just for being able to really slow reverse and to float the low gears on steeper grades. A tall geared 13 is a bit ticklish backing into bad places.

    15 shifts the same as a 10. Unless 4th and 5th are flipped.

    I've only driven one 8LL. Reminded me of a 15 but it CRAWLED! It was in a winch truck. 65 mph at 2100 rpm. Not sure what the rears were, but I'm sure 4.10s or lower.

    I'd rather have a 9 than a 10 imo. Like the steps better. Drop 1 gear on the hills compared to 2 in the 10

    you’re not missing much with either of those boat anchors, there’s a reason they are few and far between now. 8LL was another useless one, almost same lo lo as an 18 and slightly taller od

    9 speed will get the job done but the second it has to come out for anything I’d be putting a 13/18 back in, providing you can’t just plum the lines that someone removed

    The 8ll was in a tandem straight truck, with a 6-71 Detroit. It was very old in 2004.

    It was at a coop, they had a Mack floater that had been retired from spreading, and the tall tires removed. It would do about 45 anywhere because it hadn't been regeared. The transmission was a really heavy duty 9 speed that shook the whole rig when the range was switched. That place got all the cast offs from the other branches, they had a deuce and a half retired army truck, too.
