Thats an great question . It all comes down to the lesser of two evils to coin an phrase....
Depending if you went to an accredited school or not .
If you went to an accredited school or have 6 months experience . I would pick Howard Transportation out of Laurel Miss. they are flat bed and have their own buisness building and transporting transformers. They have 3 yards . One in laurel miss., Wierton w.v., and Kenly n.c.. They were not my first driving job but they were my first flat bed company and they trained me for 4 weeks on flatbeds. Others just out of school they had back then an 3 month program for newbies and if the personalities clashed between trainer and trainee they would just switch out drivers to find that right match.
When it comes to cdl schools via big companies i really do not like any of them. But for each individual if in an situation where they need to sign on to an contract to get their cdl . I would say whatever is the lesser of two evils . Hopefully after they see this thread and other threads of the like. They will be able to make that decision on an intellectual level for themselves.
I have always promoted RESEARCH the companies even if i do not approve of an company or not.
What i am hoping to achieve is that i can help someone make an intelligent choice of getting off to an great start in the trucking industry.
Another company that i liked and had an great training program is East-West INC. out of Swannanoa N.C. their training went for 3 months but that really depends on the individual and the trainer.
East-West you are going to know the gourge very well because you drive it out going west and back in going east.... get ready for mountains and icy conditions.... IMO great training for any driver.... They run teams and solo's from N.C. to shakey and the north west.

    may trucking

it used to be a great company then it started taking in trainees.....
Ok that sounds bad but its the truth.
With the dispatchers pushing ya to your breaking point and endless bugging the driver...... Yes driver you are told exactly when to pee, poop, and eat.....
Just think of may trucking as an smaller swift and you pretty much hit the hammer on the head.
Training is only for school graduates. They do not have an cdl class.
Training is an joke from what alot of drivers are saying.
Yeah get ready you might train for one day or 5 months..... Depending on their needs of course.

Driver Training Program .... Wasn't this already covered by the statement ....length of training is determined by YOUR skills.......

350.00 Per week to train.... sound like slave labor.... especially when the government is paying the trucking companies 700.00 an week to hire newbies......
I would like to know what the reimbursement is...... and then .30 CPM after training but nobody knows when that will be ...... and .30 CPM is that not like 1969 wages?

    Wow sign me up !!!!!!

    STEVENS TRANSPORT
I HAVE NOT HEARD ANY GOOD OUT OF THEM AT ALL OVER CHARGING FOR CDL TRAINING AND THE OVER ALL COMPANY .....
I WAS AT AN TA A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND WAS IN THE NEXT BOOTH TO AN TRAINER AND TRAINEE . THEIR CONVERSATION WAS WIDELY HEARD IN THE EATING AREA AND MANY DRIVERS PUT THEIR TWO CENTS IN AND THE TRAINER WAS READY TO BRING THE TRUCK TRAILER AND TRAINEE BACK TO THE TERMINAL COMPLAINING THAT EVERY LOAD THAT THEY HAVE HAD. HAD TO BE SWITCHED OUT DUE TO DRIVERS NOT BEING ABLE TO DELIVER ON TIME AND SINCE THEY WERE AN TEAM . TRAINING TEAM THEY HAVE TO SAVE THEIR BUTTS AGAIN AND AGAIN....
I KNOW WHERE THIS GUY WAS COMING FROM . I HAVE HEARD NOTHING GOOD ABOUT STEVENS AND IMO THEY ARE AN BOTTOM FEEDER COMPANY .
I ALSO FAILED TO MENTION THAT IN THE WEB SITE IT STATES YOU CAN COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING IN ONE YEAR AND BE PAID UP.... HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE !
    I WOULD STAY FAR AWAY.

    Central refrigerated

it sounds good you pay 100 an month for 12 months and the thats it.
You leave before you conclude the obligation and you pay 3000 minus 100 for every month you were there.
They pay for housing and transportation but you must supply your own meals .
Now here is my thinking on them do your year and bail, bounce, get out!!!!!
Unless you actually like it there .... It might happen..... Lets think positive....
Then again probably not ...... But this is by far the least restrictive cdl training programs out there . As long as you do your year .

While CR England is a Mormon owned company, it most certainly isn't a christian company. Likewise, Swift Transportation is Mormon also. My hubby worked for both. CR England is by far the worse company hubby has worked for. They will screw you. Don't believe me? Go to work for them and find out for yourself.

The only thing I can say about Swift is watch your back and don't question anything if you value your job. Just be the "typical dumb truck driver" and don't question anything and don't do anything that will bring scrutiny on them. They don't like it when someone shines the light of day on their business practices. They really don't like it when you involve law enforcement.

It is an shame that i have an opinion and half a brain.....
I am happy that there is other thinking drivers out there just like me....
mabey thats why we all get into so much trouble with these big ,"check your brain at the door " companies.......
Thanks for helping me reaffirm my views of these companies !!!!
If we can just help one driver or potential driver make an intelligent choice then our words will not be wasted !

I work for Central Refrigerated. They do have a good program and yes it is a training company. Get the year and say thanks on the way out.
The problems aren't with the Fm, but with the companies I deliver to. I run a refer and yes I deal with lumpers; so saying that I can sometimes just pull up to the dock and sign into my sleeper berth for the next 10 hours. Some companies have robots loading and unloading and they move about 2 miles an hours. They will never be able to fully replace humans. I go to stockyards where they kill the cows, and I go to Tyson where they kill the chickens and I go to New Orleans for the fish, Krafts underground facility for Cheese and Nestle plants out the wazoo. I have a well rounded sense of smell now for dead things, sweet things and smelly things. Yes, it is an experience and yes Refers are a pain in the butt to run with, but hey if I don't like it I can't blame the company.
Thanks for this forum. It has some very good points.

Jack, I can't thank you enough for your time & effort to bring to the forum the disgusting, heartless and ruthless tactics these so called American companies pull just so they can fleese the taxpayer just to show a better profit margin to the stockholders. Who says the slave trade is dead?
I ,again, stumbled onto this tread doing what you have been trying to show the greenhorns what to do. I'm a local construction driver, lowbed, flatbed & dump trailers, and it's tough up here in beantown. I ran reefers during the last recession around the north east, yeah NYC too,And I didn't mind it at all. Oh ya, it was the late 80's and I was getting $.31 mi. then. So anyway I was looking at the road jobs and luckily stumbled onto this web sight and could see the jist of what you are kind enough to be preaching here:Check These Maggots Out Before Jumping! I hope I don't get tossed by web bylaws for that. But I was researching NFI and Shaffer when I fell into your words of wisdom tread. Like I said Thanks, to you and the other gear grinders out there for the help. Yeah Mike.:yes2557:
