A friend of mine in Tucson has a metal fab shop. Before we used to go out shooting, he'd grab a small piece of threaded tube, usually around 3"x8" fill it with wtf ever kind of explosive #### he could which was usually just gun powder, tighten the cap down, stick a tack weld on for good measure and have the smallest hole he could for the fuse.
We'd bury them a few inches in the ground, light the fuse and run. Usually get a decent boom, but nothing spectacular.
