I completely understand that it’s nice they have that flexibility. Trust me I get that any job especially trucking you get out of it what you put into it. My previous job (food service) I continually climbed the ladder until I couldn’t stand the insane customers during this Covid #### and was burnt out (6.5 years). I was in line to be a franchisee but that seemed a miserable job to be honest.

Do they require you to start in dry van/reefer? Or can you start in flatbed as well?

A couple of other ND companies worth mentioning are Holland, Great Plains, and E. W. Wiley. I'm not sure if any hire right out of school, but it might be worthwhile contacting them. A lot of companies change their hiring requirements to fit their needs, and it's not always stated on their website.

I’ve seen Wylie, website states either 6 months or 1yr can’t remember but glad to know still worth reaching out. Great Plains is the one that does a salary if you hit miles and do OTR correct? Think I’ve seen them come up in threads here. Don’t know much about Holland I’ll definitely look into them as well. Thank you.

They are pretty flexible and do not have a set home time policy. Generally they would like you to stay out about three weeks at a time, but they do have people based out of Fargo or the twin city's that are home more often. I didn't keep an apartment when I was OTR, so I stayed out longer. Usually a month to six weeks at a time then took a full week off. Best bet would be to call them and talk to them for current policies and pay. I left the OTR division at the end of last year to go into web development, so I am no longer in the loop as to current policy's.

Everything I’m hearing about them sounds like a great bet for what I’m looking for out of the first year especially. Thanks for the help. Looking like my first option at this point.

Estes has terminals in Fargo (fairly small) and Minneapolis (also Duluth, even smaller than Fargo). I worked for Magnum my first year, good company, do what they say. But after the first year jumped ship to Estes. I now make twice as much as I would have with Magnum if I stayed on a second year, far more pay and miles. Estes is also a good company and do what they say, a big notch above Magnum. Usually Estes requires 1 year of OTR to get directly hired as a driver. But good drivers are getting hard to find so they may be bending that requirement? My advice, start with Magnum, then keep trying for a better position as soon as you have 6 months in, like Estes (Note: You can transfer to any Estes terminal after 1 year of service)

also since you said you didn’t keep an apartment maybe you’d have some direction on this part. I live in NH currently which I know they don’t run however I want to move out to Fargo, Grand Forks area or northern MN. How’d you do that? Stay at hotels during your week off? Did you use your previous residence as your address on paperwork? If possible driving myself out there going through orientation and driving with a trainer and doing a month-6 weeks to build some money to then get an apartment and fully move out could be a way around being outside their hiring area. (Don’t have strong family ties going back once for personal belongings is all I’d really need).
