hey guys,
I am looking to buy a 2001 Freightliner Century single axle 10 speed autoshift with clutch pedal
Here are the specs:
Detroit 430hp 12.7L
715k miles
Front tires 80%
rear tires 60%
brakes are at 70%
Front axle weighs 9927 lb
Rear axle weighs 5850lb
original clutch
The truck did have an antifreeze leak at the top of the head. Which he said never caused any performance problem and had the head gasket replaced and valves checked and adjusted. No leaks or performance problems since.
what do you guys think?
Thanks,
Andrew

A lot of them on the road. The biggest problem I see with them is the steering axle brake hoses, the braided ones, will get a small hole about an inch from the brake chamber from the turning motion over time. Which is an OOS condition. See a lot with the low air warning device inoperable as well. But it's like anything eles, if you take care of it, or the previous owner took care of it, it should be just fine.
Stroked F550 Thanks this. -
thanks diesel bear for the info that's good to know.
should I be worried about the previous head gasket problem?
should I be concerned with the miles on the motor or truck?
is their anything else I should look out for with the miles this truck has?Last edited: Nov 1, 2009

The head gasket, that will depend on who fixed it in my opinion and the motor itself. As far as mileage I'm not the one to ask, the other truckers are. It's like a car in my opinion. If you take care of it, it will last. If you dog it, it will not. I would have a diesel mechanic that you trust look at it and get advice from him. As with anything that has that many miles on it, somethings are going to break. I wish I had a crystal ball and could tell you, but then I would be playing the lotteries around the country and retiring.

I thought you were retired already?

sorry Diesel Bear those questions were directed to the other truckers.
can you have a sliding 5th wheel hitch on a truck with a single rear axle?Last edited: Nov 1, 2009

I don't see why not,.............
What do you plan to use this truck for???,..... -
using my 53ft step deck hauling cars mostly possibly some freight. the trailer is only rated for 24k lbs as I am a hotshot (was using a Ford F550 before)
I wasn't sure if the feds and or states required a stationary hitch over the axle on a single rear axle truck -
You'll probably run into clearance problems with the landing gear and cars hitting the back of the cab if you slide it around much,....
-
the great thing with this truck from the center of the axle to the back of the sleeper is 8ft 6" so i have plenty of room to slide it forward the most I would slide it anyways is 12"
