Is it pretty common for the tanks on these to eventually corrode under the straps and leak? I can't really see any lines or fitting that it's coming from. I believe it is leaking under one of the straps but the rubber still looks like it's in there even though its 22 some years old.

I'm thinking if the rubber isn't there anymore and the steel strap is up against the tank it probably wore a hole in the aluminum tank. Just my take

If your Fld had ft. mud flaps on it look for a place 1/3 the way up the tank where the flap holder rubs on tank and wears a small hole in ft. of fuel tank, mine did just that and I drove the ft. end up a bank to get the fuel away from hole, I used 80 grit sand paper to clean it and mixed the epoxy and spread it around the leak and went to sleep got up in nite and it was not set started eng. and turned on fan and sleep till time to go ck. it and it was set, filled up and no leaks for years?

The tank on my 1980 looked pretty rough and pitted up under the straps and bottom saddles when I took it off. It still had the rubber. Far as I know that tank had been on there since at least 1995.

It's very Common, I believe the Corrosion is actually caused By Electrolysis..

Just shout yourself a set of New Stainless wrapped tanks & save on Polishing....:nike:

You're probably right about the electrolysis. Let's not get crazy with spending $$$ on a new tank. My last name starts with an R but it ain't Rockefeller. An ordinary reman tank will do just fine. Thankfully I have fairings to cover them up so the only thing that ever needs polishing are my wheels!

We normally cut out a strip of aluminum about an inch wider the the strap. Weld it over the area and go again.
I did see a tank with J B weld over a hole and it ran many years.
