Ok what I did was take the broken bolt(pictured in post #8) and just tried to insert into the hole, its a little bit smaller than the hole so I suppose its supposed to go further down, the lil shop I took it to took most of the broken part out but said he didn't have the correct "tap n die" set.....im just gonna have to wait til Monday morning and take it to the alternator shop here in town.....

    cke Thanks this.

Im with Deere on this one......its just an alternator. Cut your loses, get a new one and move on.

Certainly not worth paying someone if you cant get it yourself.

I would go somewhere and get a tap and die set and just put another bolt in it.

If you can tap enough threads that the bolt is secure put a nut on top so it stays tight and then use another nut for your wire.

If you can't find a stud just go get a bolt and cut the head off and run the nut up from the other end and take it off the end that you cut and then you'll be able to start it again.

That is the least expensive way out although the alternator shop will be able to fix you up if you would rather go to them. I doubt they would even charge you fifty bucks to do that. That would be the second cheapest way out.

Or just buy another alternator and do one of the above and keep that one as a spare you can get it fixed or get to it when you get a chance.

Yes I’m gonna go to alternator shop Monday morning. These alternators are hard to find and I have one supposed to come in the mail sometime this week. My other burnt up while I was on 495 in DC Wednesday and I installed this one on side of the road. I just had it rebuilt 6 months ago.... this one here was the backup.

Tap it out to the next size thread and put in new bolt. It’s aluminum. Will tap out in seconds.

The alternator should still ground through the mounting anyways.

Tapping it should be easy enough, being aluminum. A bolt or stud your choice. Good for a spare.
