Weather Talk: Lightning bigger summer weather hazard than tornadoes

Now that our weather is beginning to act like summer, it is worthwhile to remember that summer heat brings its share of weather hazards.

We fear tornadoes, but lightning is actually a bigger threat. Annual tornado deaths have averaged 57 over the past 30 years across the U.S. Lightning kills an average of 70 to 100 people each year and typically injures about 700.
