Another wonderful situation!
Delivery, Chicago, Il Ford City Mall, right off Cicero. Came from NJ. 2 Stops. This run has been nightmarish and it was a simple 800 mile trip.
This is our home state, so co-driver gets his girlfriend to come up and visit from Springfield area...... Causes load to be late, we have to make 2nd stop 11/07 instead of yesterday. Girlfriend convinces Co-driver to quit...
Co Driver communicates nothing much with company, other than he has family emergency, he does so through QC only.... Im left holding the bag big time.
I make 2nd delivery. Im getting runaround from company now. Only 4 months experience, they tell me I cannot solo the truck. WTF? I completely dont understand this situation. I am allowed to either go to Calumet city drop yard or small Speedway trk stp! So here I am sitting at xt 289 speedway. Its saturday and there are no real dispatchers available, I keep asking what to do... and not sure if they expect to to wait on truck till monday for my Dispatcher or what. I guess I can just sit here, no biggie to me.... But Im completely lost in the dark....
To make matters even greater, my ladyfriend is in a wedding tonight at 5 pm, she is about an hour away from me, knows Im in town, and wants me to go to wedding. There's no chance of getting load without co-driver, but Im scared to get off truck for fear they will fire me as well for abandonment....... She doesnt fully understand situation.... SIGH...
I can get over missing the wedding...... Who knows
Discussion? Anyone?
I mean, what the heck is my dispatcher gonna tell me Monday anyways? I already know I can't solo truck... %$&^$&^((*&#$&*&T$^#(#*

I would have her pick you up if she's just an hour away. Let them know you are on break and go with her. If they won't dispatch you then you are left to your own accord. Park the truck and go.
As far as not being able to go solo... I don't know who you are with, but these companies that have these ridiculous policies need to be left with empty trucks. Why do drivers keep going to the places? I guess if your new now-a-days you need to put in your time even harder than before. Heck, I was solo one month out of training. And it wasn't even a "school". It was "Come ride with me for a couple weeks, go take your test and here ya go.. " That was 1997.
I couldn't do it now. When I hear what the companies require, and all the new laws and regulations, it makes me wonder why anyone would get into trucking anymore. The powers that be are doing all they can to make this the hardest job to do when it should be the easiest job.
Bottom line... If they won't dispatch you then you are on your time. Leave the truck secured, check back with them on Monday (if nothing would get done over the weekend) and go from there. Put in your time until you can find a "big boy" company to work with. -
If you know you are not going to get a load lock up the truck and go to the wedding.

Crazyeyes, you certainly are having an adventure learning about trucking. The weekend dispatchers telling you you can't run solo aren't the ones to make a final decision. That will come from safety and your regular dispatcher. On Monday. I wouldn't stray too far from the truck over the weekend, just in case.

I would just say screw it and go. Seems like you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. If you make your load they might look at it like you are a dependable employee.

i can't help with the truck deal, but with the women, they won't fully understand a great deal of the time. at least that has been my experience. on the bright side, after a couple or three wives, it is not as stressful.

I work for CRST. It wasn't a trainer. I did my training in July. But I am under the belief you cannot solo a truck until you have six months in. Either that, or they aren't telling me something. This was my second Co-Driver after training. Similar stuff happened with the first guy.. Couldn't solo truck. But it was a very different circumstance that lead us to separating.
Anywyas, this is the first chance Ive had to check back since OP. I did get off truck and go to wedding, Im still at home, calling my regular dispatcher shorlty, truck is parked at secure(leased) drop yard in Calumet City, Illinois. All my personal belongings are still on truck....
Ill check back after I call dispatcher! -

yea, its just a rough situation.
Been with company almost 5 months and feel completely in the dark about almost everything. For the first in 5 months time I finally made a decent connection with my dispatcher this morning. He handed out several phone numbers for other available co-drivers. This was much better and easier than the last time I had to swap Co's and dispatchers. Looks like Ill be staying with current dispatcher, as one of the drivers' numbers I was given is also on his board as well.
The other good side about this is that I have a day or a few says to put some apps in at solo companies and so forth. i just want the ability to control my own destiny, really. I mean, the truck is not currently assigned to me.... And always accountable not only for myself, but for another "newbie," or another driver as well. Like someone else said and exactly how I feel, I didnt do anything wrong in this situation. but being the truck isn't assigned to me, being I have no control over anything whatsoever, getting off the truck feels like..... They can construe things however they want over there at headquarters... And the bottom line is that I didnt even want to be off the truck in the first place, and I feel Im fully capable of running loads to and from wherever, whenever. Just nervous about the situation and a lil upset as well as this is messing with my time out on the road and the money I am making.
I was surprised that the dispatcher knew the exact date Id be eligible to "solo," the truck. he knew so at the drop of the dime without any putting me on hold and any run around. And was also impressed with the way he handled situation. Especially compared to what happened with last Co-driver/dispatcher. Gave me a little more confidence here.
Thanks for good responses, too. As most of you were right. Getting off the truck was alright so long as I parked my truck at their secure yard. For some reason, be it my own insecurity or by the way this company has handled things with me. I always feel like I am at their mercy or that thhey are trying to get me out the door.... Who knows.
Less than 2 more Miserable months... Then I will get a truck assigned to me.. Have an offer sitting on the table from a certain company with bright orange trailers.. Not to mention JB hunt... I could leave now. Also Have something going with a company out of morton, Illinois.....I dont want to job jump right now. Especially for something similar to what Ive got. But almost feel like I should, just to at least get a truck assignment and see if things improve..
Oh well, thanks again members of the board!
Sometimes I feel like I am not doing enough either, for myself. Almost Like Im not assertive enough.. Or whatever. Company runs rough shod over me, because they know they can.... Im in no posiition to be without employment....
is this the norm in the industry? Just with certain companies? Etc...
im starting to think heavily about going into someone's lease program. but Im not ready for that either. Been researching since day one here on this board and elsewhere and hearing straight from the experienced mouth that the industry is still too slow, even fpr those who know how to work it with their own trucks, to make a killing out there.
