Hello all from class 524 and good luck to all in class 525. I have orientation at Roehl on nov. 16th. Nov. 9th. was full, that is o.k. gives me more time to get things together. Has anyone else from class 524 have a job lined up yet?

Hi folks, sorry I haven't written in a while. I've been pretty busy keeping up with all my classmates on the field as well as out on the road this past two weeks. This is the end of our third week and things are really heating up now. We've just started doing our log books today, we've got much, much harder exercises to begin practicing on Monday, we're reading tons of regulations out of our green books and our mechanic Perry is trying to stuff our heads full of the correct operating ranges for temperatures, pressures and voltage.

But the funny thing about all that stuff is, I'm having a blast!!! I look forward to coming to class every single day. I'm anxious to keep practicing my backing skills and my serpentine turns. I keep trying different places to begin my button hook turns and different speeds of turning the wheel while keeping an eye out for those boundary lines (which could be a brick wall someday in my near future) I look forward to spending more time driving those Volvos and the Kenworth and the Sterling (well..... ok..... you caught me. Maybe not so much the Kenworth since it's only got that 200 drop for upshifts).

I've gotten to know the instructors a whole lot better now and I have learned to appreciate everyone's style of teaching. Our lead instructor Chris shows me how much he cares about our success every single day he talks to us. Donnie taught me not to be scared of blocking traffic if I need to (or 'borrowing' part of the road past the yellow line) Sherman has taught me to ALWAYS take my driving time seriously (but then when we're off the road, it's ok to laugh at ourselves) Donald has taught me to keep trying to improve my technique even though I may mess up the same task over and over and over again (it's that stupid range selector button y'all). Hans has taught me that schedules are very important, but can also be flexible when conditions are right. Andy taught me how "the tach is our friend". And last but not least, Van has taught me how to look cool while riding shotgun in a big rig (ok, I admit I haven't spent any time with Van as my driving instructor so he's still somewhat of a mystery for now)

But seriously, if I could talk to future students of this school and give them a little bit of advice, I would say this. If you come to this school, you can expect to work hard. If you disrespect them, you're digging your own grave my friend. If you think you can skate by with half an effort and lots of attitude, this is NOT the school for you. But, if you sign up, pay the small tuition and don't mind listening to experienced instructors tell you how to improve your driving skills, you'll do well. If you keep an open mind about the fact that might know how to drive that little Toyota or Honda pretty well, but that doesn't mean much of anything when it comes to driving that 10-speed transmission truck-tractor, you'll do well. If you can keep from complaining about the rules long enough to realize why they exist (Hmmmm, perhaps to maintain some type of structure or keep students safe or maybe just to help students develop good working habits), you'll do well.

What I'm trying to say is this. If you want to learn to drive that rig accurately, legally and safely then every instructor there will be happy to share their knowledge with you. I know I sound like a JCC commercial but I'd never even heard of this driver training school until 3 months ago. And I'm sorry if this post sounds a little 'preachy'. I just call it like I see it. Like Walter Kronkite used to say, "That's the way it is, November 14, 2009".

Funny you said that, Lastat. I was just thinking yesterday that it might be time to begin calling a bunch of companies and ask if they hire students fresh out of school? Anybody in particular you could suggest I try to talk to?

KC and DavidW, I could probably use a little advice from y'all also, if you don't mind me being so bold to ask. hehehehe

    Hey Sam:)

I am glad that school is going well for you. Yes, I would start putting in apps asap! Ask Della for a list as well.

This link can get you started:

In addition, check into the OJT (On Job Training) Program offered through the WIA Program. If there are local companies that participate, or are willing to participate then you could utilize that service.
Best of Luck and keep us informed:biggrin_2558:
