I probably still would have convinced myself that a new trucking career was what I wanted, and romanticized it even if I had read this post first.

This month would have marked my one year with Cypress Truck Lines had I not mentioned a minor surgery from 13 years ago. But once I recommitted to kitchen remodeling, things got back on track, and I had a good year despite the COVID.

It’s probably better that I keep that romantic vision of trucking, build my models, and not actually do it, instead of, figuratively, meeting my childhood idol who turns out to be a mega-dewsh.

 

Thus the problem with the industry.
The government hacks think it is and thus the blanket regulations.

Start with #5 in your cons list and look in the mirror. Fix that and it’ll take care of the rest

 

I fear the Police and DOT more than I fear Antifa and BLM.

Even with all the other cons you have listed, truck driving is still the best job I've ever had. I've worked harder for less money before I got behind the wheel.

I'm going nowhere.

 

After living in pretentious SoCal for so many years, passing through ABQ and other parts of NM during my brief time doing long haul made me move out this way and pretty much stay here. I've been to other cities and spent time there. But it's a little bit of myself and the people that live there that keep me from making another uproot.

For now anyway, truck driving still seems to be one of the most tolerable forms of employment I could stomach. Pay off all your bills, keep your expenses low, and learn to live on the cheap if you want to do something simple(some low ed/low experience work like security guard, or late night fast-food where there's only 1-2 people working) and doesn't entail a whole lot of responsibility. That's my plan anyway if I ever have to jump from this line of work.

As far as the danger of the job goes, weather and bad health seem to be the only immediate culprits. Never had any issue with any of the politically-charged rioters(from either side) when out on the job. But of course I swore off the news a long time ago and only read some "straight to the point" articles when I run across them. Televised news got pointless and sensationalized when journalists got replaced with busty, pretty faces reading off of a teleprompter.

Anywho, we all just got to find ways to make this job tolerable for as long as it takes to find a viable, escape plan. Better to do it slowly and day by day as opposed to slipping up in an irrecoverable way and experiencing an abrupt end to your bread-maker and being left high and dry and scrambling.

 

I would pull out all of my fingernails with Channelocks before I would live in Albuquerque.
