Ok, So this morning I call a few different companies (in order) Schenider, stevens, and swift to see if they were A) hiring out of Florida, B) would hire me out with no OTR. Well here is where the fun begins.

Well I call the pumpkin and they tell me there only hiring out of Jax. which is fine i kinda figured. Then I call Stevens, the girl said yes they were hiring out of florida and then asked if i had my CDL already and I told yes I did. i'm thinking sweet heres my chance... WRONG she then says "sorry were only hiring for trainees for the school no expierenced drivers at the moment" then hangs up abruptly... umm ok WTF?!?!?

Whatever, so then I call Swifty the lady said

lady: "yes we are hiring out of ur area..."

ME: " Now I have my cdl class A already But i do not have any OTR expierence all I have is a little bit of local, would that be a problem?"

lady: "well as long as u can drive a truck I dont see it being a problem in the least bit"

ME: " WOW, Ma'am, that has to the one of the most intelligent thing I've heard from a trucking company in a long time" chuckling at the same time of course Thinking I got the orientation nailed at that point and time she then says

Lady: "theres only one problem, we're not hiring expierenced drivers at this time only trainee's that need to get there cdl.

My jaw hit the floor I almost lost it.

Lady: "im sorry I probally should have told u that first shouldent I've?"

So I'm fuming at the moment and had to ask to her

ME: " just for giggles, considering my lack of OTR time and my desprate need for a job what would happen if I decided to go to the school?"

She the replies " well you have to come to memphis and the tuition would be $3,900 plus $500 for the motel room which would not be payed back because you already have your CDL and your wanting to come to this school under ur own freewill"...

as some of you can probally figure I about flipped I was polite and curtious telling " no thanx if I wanted to throw away $5,500 on something that I already have (CDL) to go work somewhere I might as well get in to a Lease deal with Prime"

Its insane whats the deal lately? maybe one of u guys can help me out. First these companies say anything 2 years or less or whatever doesnt count ( even swift) now just because I have a Cdl thats too much the lady from swift said if they were hiring "expierenced" drivers all they would do for me is give me a 3 day orientation and shove me in to a trainer truck for 6 weeks. What happend and when did everything flip around? I'm sorry guys I just had to vent I'm stuck in Trucker Limbo Hell I just want a job it dont have to be fancy nor glamous just something to pay the bills "barely I know" till i get the OTR expierence

ok rant over dont mind me wow I feel much better sorry my lil outburst was so long

If I were you I'd download trucking companies in your area (be sure it's trucking companies and not trucking jobs) and go out and see them. Weed through the list starting with your first priority jobs and work down. The more you see the better. Good companies don't advertise and you'd be surprised on how many walk-ins they hire. Never trust a recruiter or a school, they are there for the companies and not you. Do not just rely on the computer for applications. Some jobs will tell you to go to their website and others may not even have a website. Going this way at least you cover all your bases and you did all you can do. You never know, you just might walk into a terminal that just had a driver quit or retire.

To be honest with you when I was involved in the hiring process we did not even consider a person that call for a job. We figured if that person could not even come and see us we didn't need him or her.

Just because you have a CDL does not make you an experience driver. Time behind the wheel does. I would recommend a community college for CDL school and then look for a job like I suggested. I don't know how you got your CDL but a school behind you makes it alot easier for you to get hired because the company's insurance company will want some kind of training. But just remember that good companies do not need recruiters or paid CDL schools. Also, it's a tough time to get a job so don't let that get you down. I would make a list of goals and what I would want from a company. Keep track and if you find one that is just perfect for and they are not hiring make it your goal to get on with them. You do that by making yourself known by the company that you really want the job. Don't go overboard but you can check in every month or so and see if anything opened up above all go in if any information has changed on your app. Good luck.
