Where do I begin? I just graduated school. I took an eighteen week course. Graduated on October 30th. Got totally wasted that night, to. Slightly hungover still. Anyhow I have a few questions I need answered. I go to SWIFT sometime after December 14th. I don't know the exact date yet but I am in the December orientation. I have a couple questions, though.
Question 1:
What should I bring with me to the orientation? What should I take on the six week externship? I read a stickied thread and I have a good starting point but what I am looking for is a definitive list if possible.
Question 2:
I am currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the state I have earned my CDL in. However within the next six months, I intend to change my home-base to Denver, Colorado. What will I need to do? What is the process? Can I continue to drive during this period of change? What problems can I expect from both the DMV's and companies?
Few Questions.

Are you going from orientation directly to a truck? I'll just assume it's orientation first, training second, then solo third. At orientation, just change of clothing/toothbrush/pen and paper/work gloves/cell phone to last a week. For training on the truck, enough clothing for a week or so, plus your personal stuff. Sleeping bag, pillow etc. Do not take more than you can get into 1 suitcase plus your bedroll. This is because you will have to lug this stuff around from your home to the bus to the motel to the terminal to the truck back to a motel back to another truck back to the terminal again. TRAVEL LIGHT. Once you are settled in to a permanent truck, then load it up with 2 bedrooms worth of stuff if you want.

personal toiletries, bedroll, clothes for 2 weeks, money, cell phone, cdl of course medical card too. just remember your space is limited your trainer will have his truck setup for him and you will not have much space just remember things will be different when you go solo and then you can bring all your gadgets,

Go here and this list is EVERYTHING you need except for handi wipes!
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...-drivers/16652-packing-list-for-students.html you will go to post #168
Remember that the trainer owns the truck! It's HIS space you will be in so as my list says if it doesn't fit in the bags you don't need it! You also do not need to take tools or flashlights as the trainer has everything needed (hopefully) to take care of things. Don't take a sleeping bag until you get to wherever you are heading as even Greyhound charges for extra baggage! There are Walmarts around the country and you can tell your trainer that you need to stop at one to get your sleeping bag!
Now in another thread someone brought up the fact that he sleeps in T's and wears T's. Me, I prefer button up but then I'm not trainng! You can always adjust the list AS LONG AS IT FITS IN THE BAG! You'll be living out of that main bag and moving it around out of your way 2-4 times a day!
Now. I see that you live in CO. Me, Id either drive my own POV or bike down for the just in case deal where you need to leave because of _____________ fill in the blank! I don't do Greyhound (it's WORSE than teaming with an idiot!) and flying is ok BUT if crud happens and you have to get home from where ever having your own transportation is the best way to do it. Especially if it comes down to having to quit and they don't get you home to clean out your truck. They bring you to the yard and voila you unload the truck into the car! It's a pain trying to pack all that stuff onto a bus!
I will give you a bit of fatherly advice! Keep the stuff you THINK you need to a minimum in the truck! I've seen drivers fill up a pick up truck with crapola! I swear everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink! Yes a refrigerator, microwave, crock pot, coffee maker (my personal favorite!) and other stuff helps to keep the food costs down but when you need to unload due to getting canned or quitting what are you going to do with all of that crapola including the stuff you MUST have to do your job?
Keep your POV at the yard!!! They will pay you for the gas if it does not exceed hat they would pay for a bus ticket! ASK them before you go or write them mileage down and tax it at the end of the year!
Another tip: If you realize that the bottom feeder you signed on to isn't the company for you and you KNOW you're going to quit here ids an iron clad way to quit.
DO NOT TELL THEM! PERIOD! Until you GET HOME on a day off! Get home clean the truck out of everything possible (you can do the packing list thing here if you have another company lined up and need to do Greyhound!) This time you might own the CB so it will go into the middle of your big bag.
After the truck is cleaned go here: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...s-advice/94252-what-do-when-you-get-your.html
Follow those rules ! After the truck is cleaned out and your days off are over NOW you call the company and tell them you're giving them their 2-3 week notice! Please when you quit and they tell you, ok, we'll have someone pick up the truck you tell them NO FREAKING WAY! They can legally say you abandoned the truck! DON'T FALL FOR THAT ONE! You will except loads to fill out your notice and turn in the truck so that you can get it inspected and SIGNED for so (and put it this way) Safety can't screw up your DAC! And do it GET IT SIGNED FOR IN GOOD CONDITION!
Just follow that link and what I wrote about!
Good Luck
