If you go the hard wire route be sure to include an inline fuse. Those 12V cooler plugs have one inside. I have my cooler connected to the cb power posts with fuse and on off switch. It sits on the passenger seat.

Ive been having an issue and did some bench tests.. One of the most common forms of plus has a spring that holds the fuse against the pin and gives the pin its spring tension... Even running 3 amps through this the spring got hot.. turns out it has electrical resistance of 1.5 ohms... the same as a heater.. I don't know if this is deliberate, in order to limit the current draw to 2 amps, or unintentional... Anyway I simply soldered a wire to each end of the spring and ran it down the middle of the spring.... and now it just gets slightly warm drawing 4+ amps.
