In that hour, you can drive 70 more miles. That's two hundred bucks or more every day. So you spend $70 per week to make $1,400 or more. That being said, my truck's top speed is 70, but I do 65 unless I'm racing the clock.

The lower the fuel mileage the cooler the cargo! The trucks getting 2 mpg are hauling the most interesting stuff!

I haven’t regularly seen in the 5’s in quite a while, but I run loaded both ways. When I was running 50% MTY, barely working 7 hours a day getting passed by Prime, I was in the 6’s for my average. I happily take the revenue gains vs my fuel mileage loss.

This is only accurate for long runs (3+ day shots) the reality for me at least is that I have 250-500 miles to run by the next day and with most receiving and shipping hours, that 125$ a week (5.5 vs 6.5 mpg at 1500 miles and 3$/gal) isnt worth spending on saving myself more time sitting in the truck twiddling my thumbs.

But i still frequently dont dr8ve for fuel economy because i apparently like shelling out 6 k a year.... :p

In my case I choose my speed based on many factors that change often. I normally like to run 65-70 but if I get in a pack of company trucks approaching the hills I tend to speed up to get away from them. For me 65 or so usually gets the job done in about the same time as 70-75 having to pass and slow down more due to traffic conditions. When I am running wide open roads 75 or so does get some ground covered and my truck does like to air it out on occasion.

I'd say 90% of the trucks I drove had BC Cummins, and 4 is a bit low. I routinely got 6, okay, not 7, but 5.5 or 6 was the average. In the late 80's, the company I drove for had Louisville Fords with L10 Cummins, and they'd post the mpg for all to see, and I was always at the top with 7.2(ish) and that was with my foot to the floor all day.
