Hey guys,
I'm currently writing a thesis on CB slang, and I just came about these terms, and I was wondering what is the etymology of the following terms, if you could explain them to me I would be really greatful, and I'm not talking about the meaning itself, but where they come from, any referrences would be really helpful.
I appreciate your help.
And the terms are :
Jack Rabbit
Peter Rabbit
Black and White
Boogie Man
Holstein
Some CB terms clarification

Interesting , I'm on the radio from time to time and don't remember those words on a daily basis ...

PS Black & White would be a police car ....Desperado Thanks this. -
My guess is....4 of those are CB handles.
-
a thesis on cb slang? wow, America's education is going down hill quick
-
Actually, I'm not an American
and the thesis is generally about slang so I'm just touching upon this subject a little bit. And btw what's wrong about analyzing CB slang, after all it has been quite of a breakthrough back in the days.
-
You mixing your subjects here.... CB slang vs. Slang in general.
Peter Rabbit is from a book, although some people use it as a nickname.
Jack rabbit, is an actual animal in the US.
Boogie Man, is slang for any perceived or imagined "monster". IE a troll, a genie, vampire....etc.
Holstein, is a breed of dairy cow. It's origins are easily obtained on wikipedia.
Black and White, originates from the actual color early US police cars were. -
Ok, danc694u, I know what they mean in standard English, I was just wondering about their application in the CB slang. I'm just looking for any connection between the police officer and say the jack rabbit or Holstein.
-
NONE........
Jack rabbit is also slang for RUN
Holstein is slang for a fat woman. Although truckers typically refer to them as heifers. -
I've just found a definition in the Jason's Authentic Dictionary of CB slang and it actually defines Holstein as : referring to black and white vehicle used by state trooper to distinguish from loca, city or county officers. So it seems that it uses the same colour metaphor as the Black and White term
-
Jack Rabbit-A fast moving vehicle you kkep in front of you to reveal the boogie man.
Peter Rabbit- No clue.Never heard it on the CB.
Black and White-Local Police Officer.See also;City Kitty, Barney Fife, Local,Town Clown
Boogie Man-Anyone that scares you into obeying traffic laws with an ability to write large fine into citation form.
Holstein-See Black and White.Though most do not immediately recognize it as such due to it falling out of favor for other nick names listed.
As to origins.Somebody thought they were cute or clever and decided that in their infinite wisdom they should rewrite the English Language

Or that they would devise a sub language to mystify others

Hope this helps.
