Dollar General to curb logistics costs by expanding private truck fleet

I wonder who will apply for those driving jobs.

DG is a crap assignment, from whichever end it comes from.

 

Some college edumacated Weiner head decided they can do it cheaper in-house.

My understanding is those who do dollar general account is somewhat local? Just about every new cdl holder is scared to go otr so you'll have a bunch of inexperienced local boyz hauling that crap

 

My personal experience with Dollar General was regional. I was home from Saturday afternoon/evening until late Monday morning. Most guys didn't last long because it was very fast paced and physically demanding. It's actually not a bad account for guys who don't mind the daily workouts. Of course it may vary depending on what carrier or DC your dealing with but I did it from '06 to '13 and made pretty good money.

 

Although I have no experience personally, from what I have heard is that most drivers found that Dollar General job much more unpleasant than most other driving jobs AND they wanted to be cheap about it.

Seems like they will continue to have problems until they are willing to pay drivers above market rates to compensate for the undesirability of the job.

 

"Increased costs are also stemming from discretionary bonuses for trucking employees,".

So they will also decrease bonus money to save money.


I wonder who will actually be suckered in to these driving jobs.

 

The guy that just said he made 18k at Pam. I wouldn’t even fill out an app for that. Then they wonder why they can’t keep help.

There's a never ending supply of them.
There's a little town near here with a tire shop right across the street from a DG.
The DG almost always gets a delivery on Saturday about noon. It's a pretty tough back-in...kinda snaky and off set but doable.
The guys at the tire shop start the betting pool as soon as the DG truck shows up and everybody picks a total elapsed time from the street to the delivery door. Penalties are assessed for hitting stationary objects like poles or mailboxes. Extra points for cars.
It's usually a different driver every Saturday. Yesterday's total time was 35 minutes measured from the street in front of the store to the door. No hits or collisions. I've seen it take over an hour and one guy just abandoned his truck about half way in after hitting a pole, the mailbox, a curb, and taking the bumper off of a Jeep. He was last seen hitch-hiking south on 101.
We hope the DG stays open and the Saturday deliveries continue. Since the theatre burned down and the pool hall closed there's not much other entertainment in town.
