Hello - So my truck is at the shop and mechanic told me there’s excess play on the shaft and when he drove it, oil was coming from the rear end and was slinging onto the underside of my bed. His diagnosis was I needed a new rear end. Didn’t have this issue when I took it there. We called a guy and was told to replace the power divider and that would solve the issue. I am not familiar enough with this. Could I get your thoughts?

I think I would find a reputable shop and get a second opinion. That place would never put a wrench on my truck.

Sometimes a shim can be removed from the front bearing cover and the seal replaced. Makes up for normal high mileage wear. Might want a second opinion. Don't run it low on oil.
The power divider is on the front of the front differential. I have replaced some but it probably cost around 40% of an exchange complete unit. If you are OTR I wound just exchange it.

Were you actually under the truck before you took it to the shop to confirm there was no oil being slung out of it before it went to the shop? I'd want tongonto the shop and put my hands on the shaft and see the oil before I let them do anything. If there is excess play in the shaft that could definitely take the seal out. I've been told you can just re-shim that front bearing but you are just delaying the inevitable. How does the oil look in that rear end? If its good and clean maybe give it a shot. If its got much silver in it then I'd think about replacing it.

I like replacing parts before they leave me stuck on the side of the road. But obviously you have to balance that with not throwing money out the window too.

I agree with @Don379 on this one. Not everyone has the ability to fix stuff themselves but if you take something to a shop put your hands on the parts and see for yourself before giving them a blank check

Could be the yoke nut is loose and took out the seal. Nut is considered a one time use item.

Seems silly to scrap an entire assembly for what could be a simple fix.

Do you know where exactly the oil is coming from?

I’m headed out shortly to take a look at it. I know it wasn’t leaking oil from there before I took it. I had a minor drip from the PTO pump hose and that was it. Sadly, I don’t have the ability to do the work myself and as described, I am at the mercy of the mechanic. I asked him yesterday if it could be the seal and he told me no.
