I don't see how you can make this argument Al. You can buy a 5 year old shaker for around $20,000 right now. You can sell an 8 year old shaker for around $10,000-$12,000, provided that you took decent care of it. That looks like a $8-10,000 loss due to depreciation over a three year period, or approximately $3000 per year. I just fail to see the logic in spending twice as much upfront for a Paccar product when you are going to lose that same $8-10,000 in three years time or close to it anyhow.
If you want to approach the argument from the angle of the Paccar product being a nicer truck, I would agree with you completely. There is no comparison. If you are looking at it SOLELY based on the numbers, your argument is VERY shaky at best.

Me neither. But i'm hearing the same thing about the cummins ISX. Its a sweet motor. I also hear those volvo motors seem to be packing some serious power, but they have issues. I don't know what to believe! Again, I'd be getting one used...WHATEVER i get. But the 2002-2006 volvos are tempting...And unless I get a CAT in it, i think I'd rather go with a cummins with at least 400hp...Gears and newly crusin Thank this.
-
My thoughts too. If you do apples to apples on Volvo trucks with the only difference being the powerplants, I've noticed the Volvo powered units are less $$. I'd go with the ISX especially because of the wider availability of parts for the thing. That Volvo stuff is proprietary and if there's a problem.... It's off to Volvo for the fix.
Eskimo6804 and ampm wayne Thank this. -
If you are seriously looking at the 2002-2006 range, do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a pre EGR motor(2002-2003). I own a 2005 Volvo with a cummins isx, and I'm here to tell you that the maintenance costs will eat your lunch, dinner, AND the next day's breakfast. The motor runs strong but when it breaks, get your checkbook.
Some examples; one of them VNG turbos that are used on them motors cost $2500-$3500 just for the part. An EGR valve is between $1200-$1500 installed. An EGR cooler will set ya back roughly $5000-$6000 installed. A blown head gasket at the book rate at a cummins shop is right at $4000.
On a pre EGR motor; a turbo runs $700-1200. You obviously don't even have an EGR valve or EGR cooler. A head gasket on a Detroit or N14 cummins can be done for less than $2000 even at dealership prices.
A pre EGR motor also gets a bit better fuel mileage than these POS EGR motors too. I would guess based on my experience, about .5 mpg or so worth of better fuel mileage. The trucks I am buying now and from here on will be pre EGR. I will just keep rebuilding them and running them until I can't run them no more.bamanation and KO1927 Thank this. -
Not to mention that the parts for the Volvo motor will be much more costly when replacing things.
-
No kidding. I talked to a guy that had to replace a fan or serpentine belt on his Volvo motor. The price of that belt was astronomical.

I just noticed this thread and thought I'd give my 2 cents worth. I have a friend who bought an 05 T2000 from the Tampa store. It had a strange and strong vibration in it. Arrow spent a ton of time and money on fixing it and finally got it right. A ton'a $$$ - like about $8000!
On the other hand... I looked at an 07 Volvo 880 there. Liked the truck and asked what my 05 379 is worth on trade. It's very clean, great specs and an asset to any truck lot. The salesman told me that they would give me "somewhere in the teens" for it! HUH??? I assumed he was on drugs or an idiot and either way there was nothing to be gained by arguing with him. -
Hey Mark, How is Roadrunner working out for you? Are you still there?
-
Sounds like the usual stuff you hear when trading a car in on another. Only thing is, this wasn't in the same ballpark or zip code for that matter, to even begin the negotiating process. If that's the case, I shouldn't expect any more than $1,200 for my truck when the time comes
-
I'll give ya $1500 cash for it today, sight unseen.
