O.K. I am (or will be in FEB.2010) a new driver out of school. My past record is VERY clean--meaning no tickets,no acc.just a good and clean driving record.I will have Haz.Mat.Pass.endor.
What are the odds of me getting a job--local,OTR.or in EXP.
I live in CHICAGO--I just need to get a job, before I go nuts.I have been out of work from March of '09.
Am I going into the right line of work?I know that it is slow every where, however I have read that truck driving is going or has been picking-up.If I need to I would going into Expediting and working for an O/O,I just need to get behind the wheel A.S.A.P when I get out of school.
Can someone tell me the RIGHT way to go?
    I could use any help.
    Thanks
    Greg

IMHO you should apply to companies that are not large.
True, you could get on with a large company easier, but those are the ones that screw over newbies. And again IMHO go with a carrier based in the northern tier. They generally have a more humane attitude toward their drivers. If you dont mind flatbed I would recommend Path truck lines, based in Dunkirk, NY. Dont know if they hire in your area, but I think so. They were good to me...

A good clean record is good and puts you at the top for new drivers but I wouldn't stop looking at other companies. Don't trust any of them and always have a backup plan. Just rememeber there's lots of other drivers out there too.

Apply at 50-100 companies. (for starters) Get ready for turn-downs and just keep at it. This is a strange time we're in right now.

Living near Chicago is a big plus (lots of freight) It will be a lot easier to go to a big company like swift or schiender. They absolutly will hire you. Swift has a terminal in Gary Indiana which may make it easy to get home. There are plenty of truck driving jobs out there. Apply at as many companies as you can and then take your pick.

I would like to say thanks to all--for all of the advice

I know that I have all long way to go,but the best way to start is by putting one foot in front of the other and getting something done-- doing anything is always better than doing nothing!

'Scuse me! I'm just honest for now - working on humble. A little longer on the forum and I'll be meek as a lamb.
