All of these fuel cards seem too good to be true to me. I started out with TCS fuel card from Convoy. At first, I couldn't believe I was getting like .30-.60 off per gallon, saving $40-$100 bucks each fill up. The fuel statements i got in an email or confusing as #$%%. That was the first red flag. The statement doesn't need to be that difficult to read, so immediately it seemed like they're trying to hide something. Is the TA really giving TCS a .60 cpg discount, I call BS. Other people have said that the app will show one price for the discount, and then when they check their statement later, TCS actually charged them more per gallon than they advertised.

Then i tried a comdata credit card, the discounts are minimal but at least I don't think i'm being cheated or deceived.

I'd assume MudFlap is similar to TCS, where you have to prefund the card or link a debit/credit card. They're probably also trying to somehow deceive you or steal your money. There is no way these companies are being offered 40-60 cents off per gallon on a regular basis. They bait you in with big discounts in the beginning, and then hope that you don't check your statements later on to see that the price you paid was in fact much higher than what you thought you were going to pay.

I've heard on here that NASTIC is good, i haven't looked into them but I might check them out. I wouldn't mind paying an annual fee if I'm actually gettting good discounts and aren't being deceived. You gotta watch out for these finance companies, everyone thinks truckers are dumb as $%^$, and it's considered fair game to screw them over anyway you can. From diesel techs, to factoring, fuel card companies, etc. They prey on that fact that you make a lot of $$$$ and have to juggle lots of paperwork, etc and maybe they can slip one ripoff past you without you knowing.

Sorry for the rant, so there might be some good fuel cards. I think your best bet is using a good cash back rewards credit card at smaller fuel stops like some others have said.

 

MudFlap is one of the few that is truly completely free. No setup fees, monthly or yearly fees. They don’t make you load money onto their card or have access to your bank account. Everything you charge goes on whatever card you swipe to pay with.
There not setup yet at the main big truck stops but have plenty of others to choose from.

You Can get an annual from them. When and if you fuel in their crap state, enter the permit number at the pump and it gives you like 30 cents off.

I don’t pay a ton of attention to that, if I need fuel all I can do is find the cheapest place to buy it but other than that it’s out of my control.

 

I wanna say the discount is like 30cents or so. It is a fair amount. Honestly, it is prolly to encourage people to buy fuel there and support businesses. I hate the place and go out of my way not to buy anything there. Same goes for Washington. Screw them both. I make sure I have plenty of fuel and anything else before I hit that state line!

 

I've only ever once had to pay into IFTA. I always have a credit because I fuel based on the cheapest fuel I can get before taxes, not the pump price. If you're filling up in a state over because it's cheaper at the pump than the state you're about to go into, it's probably because it's IFTA rate is a lot lower, but the state you're going into is usually a lot cheaper before the taxes added at the pump. I always purchase the cheapest fuel I can find pre-IFTA, not the cheapest I can find that comes out of my pocket today.
