I'm not a huge fan of unions either, worked for one and it wasn't very productive for me. To me they seem to be no different than being friends with management, it's just another group that you have to befriend. I've personally seen the same behavior that you talk about with unions in non Union jobs, basically one group was friends with the regional manager and the other was friends with the owner. Constant fighting among both groups and both getting away with damaging property without as much as a drug test after the incidents. I've also seen plenty of lazy workers outside of unions, guys that would do one load in 12 hrs when I would knock out four. I've seen a whole group of guys stand around the clock to clock out for hours cause they wanted the extra hours.
I guess mainly I've never really been a fan of companies that reward you at a later date, because there's a huge potential of getting screwed in the end. There are companies that give big bonuses at the end of the year and I don't even like that because they can be taken away if the company is doing badly.
My grandfather worked for shell as a union guy and it did him good as well, retired after 20 years with a full pension, medical and got a gold Rolex. It worked for him but me being younger and looking around at how quickly things can change, I'm less hopeful for it.
I don't know where it will go either but hope yours stay solvent as well thanks.

I liken them to churches and graveyards.
People still have religion but attendance is down and dying has never been more popular but fewer are chosing interment.Lonesome, FFL Trucker and bzinger Thank this. -
I wouldn’t hesitate to work a Union Job. I’ve had a couple, it’s been over 20yrs. Still have my withdrawal card. Cost .50 at the time. Lol. Keeps from paying initiation dues again. I wouldn’t count on the pension. A lot has to go right to get it. But I always looked at the wage. Benefits are a big plus. Best insurance I ever had. As far as Union Jobs being for Lazy people. I don’t think that applies to Trucking. Both Teamster Jobs I had were the hardest of all. No complaining allowed.

My late Father was Union, with Borden’s until 1970 when Borden’s basically withdrew from the territory where we lived, then with Southland Corp. until his retirement in 1989. Both companies had a ‘company pension’, not a ‘union pension’. Those drivers were considered ‘white paper’, if I’m not mistaken.
My Father was glad his pensions were ‘company’, and not union. He always said the Teamster’s were on of the crookedest organizations out there.already gone, Rideandrepair, born&raisedintheusa and 2 others Thank this. -
