My son has a small refrigerator in his truck but if he's not running the truck while he sleeps, it eats up his battery. He told me that he heard there is something else out there he can use to keep his food cold without killing batteries but I cannot find it. HELP!! Any information is greatly appreciated.
Oh, one more question. He's been driving about a year now and seems to have a hard time with the lonliness. If it weren't for his blackberry, he'd be a nut case but I'm not always around for him to call. I told him to get a CB so he could talk to other driviers but he hasn't yet.
Thanks gang!!

Hiya, bgirl!
Is your son a company driver? If so, does the company he runs for allow an inverter?
If they do,that is what he can use to run his fridge. He just needs to buy one, and ask his company shop guys to install it for him.
As for the CB, it is a good idea, to keep up with traffic flow, accidents ahead, weather conditions.
The loneliness is a whole other beast. Are you the only person he has to call? Are there any friends? Other family members?
An extended network of family/friends are really a plus out here.
Good luck to your son!

Thanks Judi Kay for your response. I bought him a 1500 watt inverter when he started. I'll have to ask him why he isn't using it for the fridge..lol. As for the CB...I agree and think I'll get him one for Christmas. He keeps saying he wouldn't use it but I got an idea that if he had one in the truck, he would use it. Yes he does have a lot of friends and family to talk to. He's on Facebook but I give him heck when I see him in there and tell him he had better not be driving at the same time. He is usually doing it while waiting on a load or stopped somewhere for the night.

It sounds like he is using the inverter. It uses the battery and converts it to 110 for the refrigerator to work.
Does he post on here? This is a great way to make friends with things in common.
Have a great day!simplyred1962 Thanks this. -
I'm pretty sure he is using the inverter. Who knows...LOL. When he first started, he did post on here but they keep him pretty busy driving so I think he just does the facebook thing with family and friends. Thanks for the info...I'll let him know what you said about the conversion to 110. Just for gp...I'm in Ohio too, Findlay area. Where is Marengo?

Well,if he is using the 1500 watt inverter, and his fridge is draining power, then the inverter may not have been installed properly.
And JimTheHut is right...this site is a WONDERFUL place for a driver to make friends, get information and advice, and be in contact with other drivers.

He probably needs new batteries . I never had a problem with a refrigerator killing batteries during 10 hour breaks . I only shut it off when home on weekends . You can get inverters that sense battery level and will cut off before the batteries get too low to crank the truck .
A CB is a must , especially in this weather . Yesterday morning I-75 was shut down in Detroit due to flooding . Drivers with CB's knew bout it and how to detour around it . The CB has helped me avoid a lot of lost time sitting in backups .Beechvtail, bgirl and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
An inverter will kill a battery as fast as having the refrigerator plugged into a cigarette lighter! You don't get anything for free with an inverter and if it was installed improperly it wouldn't work period! The shop guys pretty much know how to install an inverter.
#1; He needs to run the truck just before sleeping to top off the batteries.
#2; Have the shop do a stress test on them to see if they are getting old.
#3; Have the shop clean all the connectors. That is a common problem
I've had batteries get low due to heavy usage but the low battery cut off should wake him with the buzzer when it goes off so he can start the truck. -
My husband always carried a jump box with a 12 volt outlet, just so he could run his fridge whenever he needed it... charged it as he rolled.
