I am just getting started and recently got my class E license. I have almost finalized my LLC and now start the real Questions.

Do I need to get a CDL to really make this work or is the E good enough for part time hot shot work?

How much insurance do I need to carry especially with regard to the customers load?

I have a 2002 dodge and one more 94-95 in the works and am thinking of doing the majority of the hauling with a flatbed trailer(is that a good choice for a trailer)?

What is a good way or place to find loads? Someone has suggested Uship but I cant see how anyone can make money at the prices I'm seeing? So what Is the best webb-site for a smale-time part-time newbie hotshot driver?

Isnt class E a regular license?..Ohio just goes to class D..I am pretty sure you will need a class B if you are going over 10,001 pounds.I am pretty sure the industry standard is $1 million for cargo insurance. The trailer depends on what you wanna haul...As far a bein part time,I dont think it would be worth it..Usin broker networks can be dicey cause you can get screwed over real easy..You probably should have given this more time to look into it better...Jumping into somthing and not knowing anything is a quick way to set yourself up for failure..You are gonna have to do some more research, probably make the call to go full time to make any money, and probably lease on to a hotshot company for a bit....Not tryin to burst a bubble, but this is one of those things thats easier said then done...

This will answer most of your questions . http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/online-registration/onlineregdescription.htm

You cannot make enough part-time to make it worth while . Any hours you are compensated for have to be reported as on duty and count against HOS available hours . You will need MC authority , DOT inspections on the truck and trailer a driver's file for yourself , a DOT medical card , and belong to a random drug pool .
Liability insurance requires $750,000 on general freight . $1,000,000 on hauling vehicles .
U-ship customers aren't reliable . They will seek multiple bids , pay too low , and cancel at last minute .

First and foremost thank you for responding to my thread. In Missouri a class E is one step above a normal license. It is a (for hire) license like for a pizza delivery driver---some people refer to it as a Schaeffer license. I already own the one pickup and plan on spending less than 10K on the second that I need anyway for my camper that will not fit on my shortbed truck. Because my initial investment is small I can do part-time, and if I wanted full time work I would look into driving a big truck for someone else. I can make arrangements to borrow rent and buy various trailers but am hoping to find out what other hotshot drivers who work for themselves have found the most lucrative. One million and two million is what I have been hearing thanks for that info.

RR, you would have to go full time, best is a 3 car or more carrier. Where you going to sleep at night? Only 1 sleeper is approved for small trucks. I have hauled parttime and I can do it because I'm retired but still broke even and my equipment is paid for. I still haul horses to Ok and Fl but have the business and no one s going to steal it because we haul our own. Horse hauling is iffy, people cancel, dont have paperwork ontime and you can run ety a lot. Go Class A, all the addons as you never know. go to Uship and read up on light hauling forums.

Over in here Ohio you can use the standard license for delivering pizza,etc..etc..You can use it for pretty much anything..Unless its a passenger bus of 16 or more, and a vehicle that is under 10,001 pounds..

Is a Schaeffer license the same as a chauffeur license? The amazing thing is the rest of you understood what he meant!!:biggrin_2555:
