but thats what its all about. ive driven proudly for 2 local companies in my 11 years and due to economic reasons both are now gone and im contemplating going with one of the big companies but have a few questions.

1.) will i have to go thru training like the new recruits and with a trainer for 4-6 weeks?

really would just like to know what to expect about the hiring process thru til im actually driving. im really looking for something longterm as im 35 years old now although not old the mindset changes. Looking towards the future and i like stability. i do not have any accidents and my mvr is clean and with 11 years experience i wouldnt think getting on somewhere not to be a problem, just dont know what to expect from the larger carriers. any info would be great, thanks guys and gals........justin

In answer to your question, you already have the CDL, so no you wouldn't be starting from scratch, but the larger the company, the more likely you will have to go with a trainer for OTR training to satisfy insurance requirements.

There are lots of companies that run OTR though PA, hiring on with someone shouldn't be a problem.

Some companies will send you out with another driver to get you up to par with their system...computer, paperwork, logs...but you might meet some resistance due to your experience, you would be at the top of their pay scale, with so many "rookies" who could be at the bottom of the scale...just saying be ready for some frustration with the "climate" the way it is.

    Good luck on your search!

Are your two local companies driving local? Most OTR companies will poo-poo that time in saying, you need OTR experience. But, it won't keep you from getting hired, just makes you kind of a Newbie.

Your close to me,Try William Altman out of worthington PA, and Ronald Gross out of Cabot PA, Altman hires new drivers and runs reefer and Gross wants 1yr exp. and runs flatbed (mostly steel, I believe). They both are reigonal companies too. I know that John Brown trucking in butler PA is hiring reigonal/local drivers, Mclymonds is hiring drivers in portersville PA, Have you tried EZ trucking on RT 66 out of new bethlehem, they have a sign out for drivers, Mccauley trucking is also hiring I believe. There's so many places around here to try before you jump in with one of those mega-companies, you've just gotta search around some. Good luck man.

In that case you should be fine. An orientation for 1-5 days depending on company and should be out on your own. If your time is mostly OTR you should not have to go with a trainer unless it's for a very short time just for reasons otherhalftw stated such as learning that companies "system".

I know and it's one of those things where those people have no clue. I'd like to see an OTR driver take an oversize 85' truck in the city all day long and say that was easy. My company was just the reverse. They wouldn't take any OTR drivers and only wanted in the city tanker drivers. It's all ok by me because I made a whole lot more there than any OTR job I ever had.
