For all he knows, the Dealer could have gotten the Truck from the previous Owner, sold it to him before it got repossessed. Meanwhile the finance company’s looking for the Truck, until the Dealer pays the Lien off. Nothing would surprise me. I sure wouldn’t give the Truck back for a refund at this point. Go Drive for someone else, if I had to, for now.

It's no wonder the OP hasn't returned with all the bickering back and forth. Dealerships not having the original title and selling something on their lot is normal across the country. They buy something at auction or as a trade in and a day later after its run through their shop is put on the lot. The title never gets transfered into their name but into the new owners name. This is standard practice. With out of state purchasers coming in and having to get tags in their own state the process can take a very long time. The title has to go through the state it was originally titled in, then sent to purchasers state to get a title in said state. Hes at the mercy of state government and in our current climate with covid this process is drawn out even longer. In order to get tags the "pink slip" or proof of purchase should work in just about every state in the U.S. why they are giving you an issue doesn't make much sense. But since they are IN should re-up your temp tag.

I have to agree with you. Plus its case by case. Private party to private party and I'm handing you cash? I want a title. But go finance a new car. It takes weeks to get a title. The dealer 99% of the time has financed or leased the car for the lot. It takes time. You have documentation to back up purchase. Yet their still is shoddy dealers, like people. They could be jumping title, or maybe they took it in on trade not knowing it had a lien. All this happens everyday. But its up to you. If your uncomfortable, hire a attorney for large purchases. You can do a performance bond were set amount of money is released at set completion intervals.

I once waited 6 months for a deed to a home. It was all under contract. I was not worried. The seller was a bank who held the deed. I knew this going in.

Now I'm not certain for his state, but in Ohio you can not get a temp plate once title is transferred. His title is not transferred, what stops him from getting another temp? Maybe the dealer should pay for it.

When you handed over the cash what documentation did you recieve? No title no cash..

If it had been a private owner would you have been this trusting?

This is all simple some are making this complicated
Rule #1 when buying any vehicle ...No money in your hand until the orginial title is in my hand
Plain and simple doesn't matter who I'am buying from
