I did the ironman in training so I could get home for Thanksgiving. I passed over the $500 bonus and ended up having to pay more than $700 to get home from Florida to catch a plane because the company wasn't able to get me home on time. Got back after Thanksgiving and tested out and was assigned a truck. Spent three days waiting for it to be fixed, then two more for more repairs after a second inspection. Spent one week out and now I'm back in the shop. Waited 3 days for an oil change and now there's more work to be done on the truck. My dispatcher is pissed because I'm not driving but I'm not going on the road with an unsafe truck.
So, if I leave this company with only this much experience am I screwing myself? I can make more money at Walmart instead of sitting in a terminal. Do I have any options or am I at the mercy of the company right now? Can this end positively?

What company? A dispatcher can get pissed all he/she want's if they have a problem with it then you can report it to safety. As for the truck, I would have just asked for another one. As for getting home, well that's something you have to plan for in advance which is not uncommon in this industry. Everything in this line of work is far from routine. If you just started out getting your CDL then I would wait a little bit but if your a seasoned driver then I don't think it would hurt to leave. I've gone through three companies in the past year and a half. Two due to BS the other due to family issuse's. Fixing to get back on the road again soon.

the 500 dollar bonus sounds like the Werner "incentive" They give you a 500 dollar bonus after your training is done and you do your first load

Heck if you drive for werner, welcome to werner's world,I went thru the same thing but I didn't give up.Hang in there, its not going go well if you quit after few weeks or month of employment. You can ask for a another truck if yours being repair. What ever you do,good luck.

I was thinking the same thing.

Like so many others you screwed yourself and your family when you went to driving school and tried to get in an industry that's been on a steady decline for over a year .
You just explained why carriers keep hiring trainees . People like you keep quitting and carriers could care less . -
Unless you're willing to give your heart and soul to the company/business, work for WM. Missed holidays, getting jerked around, shop headaches, funky equipment, pocket change paychecks, Police agencys, way too many rules, great weather, (right) don't even think that "freedom of the road" makes up for it.
