I grew up in Iowa....farmers. From the time you were old enough to hold a hoe (not the trucking kind), your ### went to work.
Walking the beans. Hoing out weeds for acres and acres.
Kinda makes you who you are in a good way and in a bad way.
The good way is that you'll never starve because you always knew how to work.
The bad way is all you know that brings value to your life is work.

Sounds like a plan. The only chance you have of finding some redeeming qualities is to get him away from his enabler.

My Old Man used to threaten Military School. I got into a lot of trouble. The fact of the matter is, he was much worse than I ever was. I guess he knew this, and that’s why he would bluff me. It’s hard sometimes to remember how we really were at that age. A lot gets lost in ideal memories. Sometimes the more you push, the more resistance you’ll get. Especially with a teenager. Can’t wait to grow up, yet anxious about their future. It’s better they’re defiant, shows Independence. When they argue, it shows their smart. They’re just not prepared for the unknown. That’s scary. Sometimes a hands off approach, is better. Puts the ball in their Court. Somehow you have to get past the my way or the hwy natural response. That doesn’t work past a certain age. Better to let them realize it’s all their choice. It’s up to them. Main thing is to not let differences destroy your relationship. Let them know they have your support, whatever they decide. Instead of just being focused on defending themselves and disagreeing with you, let them think about their future. Let them know, it’s their choice. You can’t make anyone do anything. Maybe maybe, they’ll ask for advice. Then you have a chance to influence them. And if that don’t work best his ###!!! Lol. Just kidding.

I have a nephew that’s being enabled by his Loving Grandma, and Mother. They mean well, but he’s not hungry. He’s very Lazy. Looking for the easy way. No outside exposure to the real World. They’re doing him a disservice. All in the well meaning name of Love, and Understanding. It’s very hard to watch.

That’s so true. I recall being sent out back with a sickle to cut the grass. 4 yrs old. It seemed overwhelming. Who gives a 4 yr old a sharp sickle? Lol. Not to mention seeing the slop jars get pitched off the back porch every morning. Wonder I didn’t get Snake bit. Gotta Love the Irish work ethic. You can be the biggest Scoundrel in Town. But hey if your a good Worker, you get respect. Lol.

My half brother is 50+ his mother still sends him money. Easily more than half his adult life, his mother has given him allowance. I ask to hold 5k for a down payment on a house I get told to f myself, from my dad. "your not starving and you don't need it. Gordon ..." I'm trying to buy a home.... I didn't need it, but it's better to show more in a bank account to get approved. Especially when bidding time is three days after after a house gets put up for sale. After a point my half brother is just stealing the inheritance that should be split. Like wtf. Life isn't fair just be glad you get a fair shot where you can control your destiny.

We had the same situation here....our youngest...very lazy and when he found out the property had been put in a Trust, with him being the eventual recipient...well he just got worse. He started talking aabout after we die, he could just sell the place and not have to do anything for many years....then we sat him down and laid out the numbers...it was hilarious seeing his face when he discovered that taxes still had to be paid every year, the utility bills are very high, the cost to keep up the property....then we got in the truck and took him down to Home Depot and ran a tally list of regular upkeep items (yard, in house,) then over to the appliances if they fail and need replaced....today, just a few years later, he is very proud of being the Starbucks Manager with Safeway...not the greatest, but he only has a GED, no college. And last week, Safeway offered to set him up in some college retail courses and cover the cost (reimburse with only a "C" average). Now his credit is actually very good, he just bought a 2021 Hundai Sonata....and he isn't dipping into my money, he's actually buying us things now!

Never wanted or expected anything from anyone.
That's how I've schooled my boys.
If you get something, happy days.
If you don't, you were warned.

    That said, they'll do ok

Thats great!! I think there’s a lot of pressure to succeed. Facts are, just about everyone I’ve ever known, just gets the best Job they can find. Nothing wrong with working at Starbucks. Honest Living. Somewhere along the line, People started looking down on anyone making less than them. Fast Food workers often get yelled at by customers. Maybe it’s always been that way? Seems more apparent now, with the increased amount of Service Jobs. Truckdrivers a good example. No Respect!! I don’t get no respect!!
