We had a schoolboy in 5th grade join us mid year, he never had a hand. He did have a arm that ended for him naturally halfway down the forearm. To him, one handed is life normal. To us, it was a freakshow pardon the term because we were a .. predjudiced student body at that time long ago against him.
We had to put him to the test one day in gym. The test given to that boy was the rope all the way up to the truss steel roofing about 30 feet up. It was a very public challenge to him. Thinking back on that day Im glad I was there to bear witness. (I'll explain in a moment.)
Up the rope he went. Down he came. Everyone was silent. Then cheered. They had to. Then the teacher explained for us all that people born without certain things that everyone else takes for granted never had that to worry about in life.
I came from a school run by the State in Columbia, in that school half of us 64 in total were deaf people who went to what people called normal school from Kindergarden through roughly the 4th grade equivilant.
There was 50+ who were on the other side of the school campus in a totally seperate set of buildings. These are the ones who will require caregivers and very special trained teachers to teach them what not to do. (As opposed to what to do....) Eventually they must reach adult hood if they are fortunate and then be confronted with a life time of limitations. And they don't even realize that they are limited. For them they were happy as you and me on some days. -
