Might not be required. But it's a good practice.

Legally you are wrong. All logs must be true and accurate. Also the logging definition of sleeper is " All time resting in a sleeper berth."

Logging off duty while in a sleeper is log falsification. Will you get in trouble? Only if you tick off an leo. Claiming it's fine to do doesn't help members that may not be aware it's actually illegal.
Also, a team member can be off duty in the passenger seat. But it's only for a max of 3 hours and only before or after (not split between) a 7 hour stay in the sleeper.

Every night when I park for my 10, I log off duty and never use the SB status. In all of my inspections, it's never been called into question one time, even during a log audit.

    Numb Thanks this.

Yes, but it can. My point is that while unlikely, claiming it's legal when it's not helps no one. Claiming it's unlikely to be an issue is fine.

And remember, the issue was brought up because the op wanted to know what is and isn't log falsification. That requires a distinction in what's legal and what is illegal, but rarely enforced.

Nor will it ever be. You can switch between line 1 and 2 if you insist on notating when you went to bed and woke during a 10 hour break up but nobody will care. It's an irrelevant distinction for a solo driver. For a team truck it is an important distinction, for at least 7 hours of a 10 hour break I guess. (Was not aware of that 3 hours you could log in the passenger seat but that's nice to know.)

Either take care of business or find another company that doesn’t try to do things like that.

What exactly is the difference between 8 hours off duty sitting in restaurant or motel room and 8 hours in the sleeper?

Your company asks you for help one time and everyone loses their mind? Split sleeper is perfectly legal and a very helpful tool. What happened to going the extra mile? And there's a difference between going the extra mile and being abused
