Make sure you have your eyes open when you are getting quotes. I just got the 2nd quote back so far where they lied about my experience. I got a $13,000 quote from an agent for Progressive and knew that was way too good to be true.
-
When I first got my CDL in 2015 I bought a truck and got my authority. My insurance is with progressive and runs about 5k a year for the liability on the truck. I do have three other vehicles on the policy though two pickups and a dump truck.

My mentor has been driving 8 years. Clean record and pays about 7k for an 01 Pete. Do different states vary that much?

Hey sir
I hope all is well.
how did you managed to get insurance as a new driver? -
-
So you proved the naysayers wrong and made your dream job happen? Well done, sir.
Can I ask what the ballpark was for that first year of insurance? I know it will probably be a lot more now than in 2017, but just curious. Also, did you end up buying your truck or leasing/lease to own, and did you go sleeper cab or day cab, with how many miles, and did you run into any major maintenance issues early on? It kind of seems like there aren't many used tractors under the 400k miles mark, and I know that tractors can go a lot longer but obviously it would suck to buy one and spend most of the year repairing it. Oh, and also did you end up buying your own trailer as well? Or did you manage to get by with rentals or tractor-only bids?
Thank you for replying if you do, and congratulations again on making things happen despite so many posts in this thread who attempted to dissuade you. -
Yeah i bought my own truck and trailer. Seeing the prices today, I cant believe i bought a truck under 500k miles for 33k. My trailer was 7300 bucks and it was in decent shape, and yes i also can’t believe i got a dry van for that price seeing what old ones are going for nowadays. My truck and trailer payment was 1,295 a month, and my insurance was 1,800 my first year.
and yes it does feel good proving people wrong. But it was not easy and i almost failed lol. But i persevered, i had a blown engine, blown tires, check engine lights, egr issues, and everything in between. I lost 7k my first 6 months after working like crazy. Thats -$7,000 after all i spent starting the business and working for 6 months. My wife said she saw a lot of money going in and a lot going out, and ask why am i always gone yet we are in the same boat financially (even worse) than when i started.
But i pushed through all that and now all equipments been paid off for a few years. I work local now home everyday netting about 2500 a week and it feels amazing, i’m most proud that i’m able to spend time with my kids. I’m actually on vacation as i type this lol.
you can do it man, what i learned is talk to others, truckers and owner ops are always willing to share their expertise and advice, whether its positive or negative, and take it as knowledge. Theres resources out there to help you get through. I’m still learning stuff everyday.
good luck and be safe out there.Diligent_Transport and Speed_Drums Thank this.
