Back in the 70's when road dope was sold out of side boxes everywhere, I ran with drivers who would leave NC and run to Ca. non-stop. I don't know how many of these drivers are alive today, but I knew them then.

I couldn't do that. Drivers used to kid me saying I was going to get bed sores from sleeping so much.

About the longest I have driven is 38 hours. No way I could do it now, nor would I want to.

My longest stretch was from just outside L.A. to Stroud, Ok. Just about 1400 miles. I was running with one of our teams and every time they would switch a driver I would start a new conversation again. We plan a stop for fuel and I would plan on stopping but would get out, stretch, and then say " I can go to ....." Next thing I knew I was in Stroud. Slept for most the next day.

I also had Denver area to Detroit once when I was going home. About 1300 or so miles. Back in 2005-06 I used to quite regularly leave Columbus, Oh. on Sunday morning and not stop until I was in New Orleans, Baton Rouge or somewhere along there. Those days are long gone. I haul gas loacally now and my long load now is from COlumbus to Cincinnati. :biggrin_25522:

I got busted by a DOT cop that saw receipts that had me in calhoun, Georgia and Denver, Colorado on the same day.

Back in the day, on I-10, there was nothing between Tucson,Az and ElPaso and between ElPaso and San Antonio. If you had the power you could really cover some miles.
On 40, there was nothing between Albuquerque and Amarillo and Amarillo and Okie City. Between Kansas City and Denver, there was a 600 mile stretch of nothing, and west of Grand Junction, Co you were in no man's land on 70.

Lets see here Overnight Davenport IA to Laredo TX one time. Then couple months later Casa Grande AZ to Stockton Nonstop. The 2 years later pulled out of Salainas CA finally grabbed 4 hours of sleep in Sydeny NE and then relayed the load in Salem IL the next day. Worst one was El Paso TX to Winterhaven with only 2 hours of sleep right after getting TO EL PASO had to relay the load team driver had a Heart Attack I was the only driver close enough to get it there on time. I was beyond tired.

I think the driving between sleeping breaks is about 1700 Kingman, AZ to Salinas, CA/ Corrine, UT/Sugar City, ID, but the rest of the week was no picnic either, So here it goes.

    1700 miles
I think the worst was a multi part load,Left Kingman, AZ about 21:00 Sunday, Arrived in Salinas 08:00am to (620 miles), unload at Sinclair Paint Store , then over to Dole (had to count/temp check as they were loading) and it was off to Corrine UT(900 miles) had a team to run. Called in empty to dispatch sent to pickup in Sugar City, ID (180 miles) or so. Got there got loaded slept for a few hours maybe 4 or 5 and the qualcomm started going off that the load needed to roll for Hunts Point 2400 miles with 52 hours.

    950 miles
The tease to keep you rolling: but If I could get it into the Indianapolis yard ( Edinburgh 1800 miles) got as far as Grand Island NE (950) that was it shut down for about 5 hours. I was seeing Elephants and Giraffe's running past me figured it was time to sleep.

    1260 miles / 470 miles
Had Breakfast and a shower took off for took off for Edinburgh, IN (790 miles), as I was nearing the Edinburgh yard got a qualcomm instructing me to drop and hook and get to Springfield, MO Asap as per safety "Log Dept". Arrived at night dropped New York and Hooked Lancaster, CA headed for Springfield MO(470 miles). Upon arrival in Springfield fuel island I was told to park it and see safety, so I figured I was going to get shut down for awhile. She told me she had toward a package for me to Kingman and be sure to pick it up. She said grab a shower on the way out you look rode hard and put away wet. The only instruction from safety get cleaned up before you leave. Hmm not so bad. Went ahead and sleep for 8 hours (by the way great buffet's ion Springfield, MO.

    1300 miles
Upon arrival to Kingman, AZ(1300 miles 19 hours non-stop fuel in Amarillo, TX). Again got to love those guys in the inspection/fuel bays given my package from Springfield Safety and took off for home Tehachapi, CA (295 mile 5 hours). Arrived home 23:00 Friday.

5680 paid miles 5 days 1136 per day average
Delivered 08:00 Monday at Rite-Aide Lancaster, CA on time.

Everybody puts this total on the driver, but not so if you want to get home. Dispatch tries to look like they care, but its all about the money. Running legal comes out of home time. Eventually you will do what it takes to get home. And yes the money is good but you don't see it the wife does.

Oh yeah, "The BOX" contained 10 days worth of Qualcomm printouts, that they wanted matching logs for. Yeah right. That thing sends out a location at least once per hour. Needless to say without a co-driver there was no way to match it. Turns out DOT was coming in so they wrote us up (Dog and Pony Show), after the audit it was back to dispatch as normal.

Any how sorry for the rambling, I know this is not unusual for produce.

San Antonio,TX. to Sacramento, CA. With a stop to deliver a partial in Casa Grande, AZ.
Back in 1992 I didn't run quite as legal as I do now...
I picked up in San Antonio early Thursday morning and delivered Sacramento on Friday night.

1800 miles...Kept the left door shut and averaged 78 MPH!
