Get your own IRP/IFTA account as mentioned above. If not, your carrier will overcharge you for them and you'll have to beg for a Hunter's Permit when you're in between leases.

I keep telling people to get their own plate for this reason, the plate belongs to the company unless it is in the contract that you can keep it.
I don’t get why people don’t buy them, they are cheap. -
Lazyness mostly. For me i view getting company plates as a good way to get your foot in the door but you should switch to your owm MC and IFTA asap.baha Thanks this.

In the 80s and early 90s GA was one of the last states to go to the IRP plates, and when they did I got one from co. I was leased on with, then they got bought out by a big co. and I switched co. that year more times that I could remember and bought more tags than I could have bought a old vette to drive so I paid for a IRP tag in my name then it only cost 1 dollar to change the name of co you were leased on with at the IRP office?
BigBob410 Thanks this. -
I like cardboard homemade plates that say "lost tag" on them. Seen on trailers a lot, not sure if I've seen one on power tho !
BigBob410 and Speed_Drums Thank this. -
actually it isn’t all that simple. Some companies won’t lease on a truck unless you run under their plate program.

A car hauler company that was all o/op back in the late 90’s or early 00’s sent a bunch of them into Port Newark. Told them they had to haul one load out to Long Island to get a load out of there. All of the owners stuck together and said No away! At that point the company told all of them to leave their plates with the terminal manager and have a nice day. Since they didn’t have their own plates all of them were on their way to Long Island that afternoon. I don’t think I’d ever be caught without my own base plates.

ProfessionalNoticer and baha Thank this. -
So they can rip the lease operator off by inflating the price of the tags. So those companies you mention aren't worth leasing on to. It's a great litmus test too!
