For the past 4 or 5 years I've done my tax w/ Turbotax online and have been well satisfied with the ease and convience of their service, especially their online filing method to both federal and state departments. The cost is quite affordable and the speed of my returns, via direct deposit, I have come to value highly. However, I have career changed into the trucking
industry as OTR Driver and this is my first years filing of my earnings. What am I to expect and how do I best initiate my return? I have the entire years earnings to claim with two employers (Carriers) in conjunction with the "per diem" thing of my training/first company. I have spent a considerable portion of my income on OTR expences such as physicals, license, maps and other gear, clothing, CB, cell phone and laptop, tools, tolls and food which are to be deducted from my gross annual income. Your consideration and advice in this matter wud b appreciated. Thnx

personally i don't believe in doing my taxes by myself or through any PC program. i go to a professional tax preparer, one in which i have been going to for about 25 years now. his dad started the business, and MY dad was a client there, and still is today, although the "founding father" has long since passed away. this guy knows all the in's & out's of what's deductable, and what's not. sure, i pay a fee every year i go there, but during the rest of the year, his advice is free of charge. also, if there should ever be ANY kind of problem with my returns/filings, he will represent me at the inquest at the IRS.........you can't get that with a PC program, now can you.....?????

I acknowledge and appreciate ur reply Pro1drvr, however, I renew my info request to the forum now

i guess you don't get the "gist" of my posting, so i'll say it reallll slowww for you.....
get a certified public accountant that knows the trucking business, and he/she can help you make all the right decisions regarding tax write-off's etc, etc.....
a professional accountant will be a better way to go than a pc program, which can be buggy, written poorly, and have some valuable information left out........... -

Okay. I'll look for an accountant then.

If you are not up to date on the current tax laws.especailly for trucking. It is best to go to a pro with trucking knowledge. Example, I have been told you cannot write off you cb by 2 different tax people. Now I feel you should be able too( traffic reports, at shippers gate). But according to them you can't.
I may stand corrected, about writing off the cb. I've looked that up. On 2 different sites it states."may be taken off". -
The CB is definately an item I wud list as tool expence. I will do as suggested and appreciate the comeback you guys provided. Plz understand that I cut n split my own firewood rather than pay 4 several propane fill ups a year.

So do I but a good tax guy will pay for himself twice over. I have used turbotax in a pinch. it's okay but it isn't going to know every situation. Actually the year I used it I got a second check from the irs a few months after my tax return becase THEY found a deduction I didn't file for
