Ran into a VT driver yesterday. He said he runs out of Marysville, OH and he's home pretty much everyday. He deadheads from home in Lorain, OH to load 7 trucks on an 80 footer in Dearborn, MI. He runs out to places in PA and then goes back home. He says he makes $2800 wk and does this 5 times a week.
I've been with Moore Transport for 5 1/2 yrs. I've had a new truck for 5 yrs. Supposed to be getting a new one soon. Day cab, auto, 80' QL. I get 4 weeks paid vacation. Hotel every night.. Average $1600 a week when the loads fall in my favor. It was much better before we lost the Elwood contract to good old United. They gave up Belvidere because they weren't paying anything and still wanted to reduce rates.
I used to do the same runs every week, leaving Sunday returning Fri to N Ohio and pulled around $2200. Now, I leave out Sunday morning and finish up Thurs afternoon. I've been pretty comfortable at Moore but their maintenance dept lacks due to they can't find mechanics. The ones they do have are good mechanics but they're way overburdened. I heard they don't make that much.
In light of the pandemic and the microchip shortage, I'm not certain that right now is a good time to jump ship. I'm thinking I need to just stay put and see what happens. But wow $2,800 a week sure does sound nice. I'd be happy with the $2200 I used to make.
Moore has also been doing some management restructuring too. When Covid hit, some drivers were off work for a few weeks. The owner stepped up and paid all the drivers a small salary for that time.
I think it was around $1000 a week.
What would you do?
Know anything about Virginia Transport?

I’m not sure what might have changed at VTC after I left. I know about a year ago I got 2 phone calls from VTC asking if I wanted to come back. I declined. I was one of the 50 or so guys that stayed running thru the entire shutdown running Vans out to Indiana and deadheaded back to Baltimore. I know that all the drivers, regardless of where the money came from, got paid $1700 a week at Moore. From what I was told the VTC guys sat at home and drew from unemployment. That went a long way in my book!
One of the reasons that works for me at Moore is I haven’t been North of the Pa. Tpike in Pa. and haven’t been north of Md. in the East. When I was at VTC I got a steady diet of the GW and north!
The shop at Virginia (in Rhode Island) is the best I’ve worked with!!! “Oh By the way Dave” will get your ride taken care of!!! And they have the shop in Marysville that I only went to twice when I was there. I sorely miss the Pete I drove at VTC. I have been in a new Freightliner 80’er here. I love the 80’er but not so much the freightliner part! And at VTC it’s all living in the truck unless you’re in the shop or home. I was happy at both companies for different reasons and would recommend both for different reasons.
I know what I average at Moore is better $$ then when I was at VTC but lanes change. Maybe they make more now. But that few extra bucks isn’t worth it to me to park on the GW!
Otr Traveler, Hammer166 and Banker Thank this. -
I'm sure we've ran into each other. I load at night very often so I don't have to deal with traffic. Thanks for your input. -
