Jordans response is not even in the same zip code as some of these athletes responses and actions today.

 

Don't focus on the response - look at what he was being asked. Jordan made every effort to avoid taking a stance, one that he was being forced into making. If no one cares what these guys think, why are reporters asking them poltical questions? If sports should stay out of politics, why are players contractually obliged to record PSAs? Why do politicians invite players to campaign events? Why do teams invite office holders to throw out the first pitch? Why does the White House invite every national championship team to come visit?

The players have been used as political pawns for decades.

 

But again. ALL of it outside of work.

 

When are they "outside work"?

 

Anytime they are out of their uniforms not playing. Their job is to play a sport. That they are a celebrity is just a side effect.

 

So when Michael Jordan is endorsing Nike, that's not work?

 

That's a side job. Let's not split hairs. Do you think Nike would want him protesting XYZ or talking about who he is voting for in the commercial. If it wasn't part of the script. No. Because that's not what they are paying him to do.

 

Ok let me rephrase. Leave your political viewpoints, and social justice agendas at home. I agree that politics has had ties to sports for a long time, with ceremonial recognitions after championships, and honorary first pitches etc...but In no way has that tie ever been intended to push a personal narrative, or agenda.
