This really bugs me. There are several rest areas in Texas now that are/ have been converted into check points, scales, coops what ever you want to call them. To top it off they will not let trucks park there when they are closed. Is there anything that can be done about this?

No not really. Many States are facing fisical problems and as a cost saving measure they are closing some rest areas.

I have been arguing about this very thing for years. The states have taken Federal Funding and built these rest areas for the convenience of the traveling public and now they come in and either close the rest areas and then use them for "check stations" or they will even use active rest areas, mixing cars and trucks in a congested tight lot. West Va. is famous for this on 1-81 and I have seen north and south bound rest areas in West Va so congested, long lines of trucks trying to get in, that if a family needed to stop it would have been impossible.

Once something is taken away it's almost impossible to get it back!

why should a gov't SPEND money providing facilities and services to it's citizens when it can MAKE money off of them by turning rest areas into check stations and steal money from hard-working citizens?
Redrider Thanks this. -
It seems that the "new sheriff in town" for Virginia is going to be re opening 12 of 18 currently closed rest stops as of March 2010. This was covered tonight (Tuesday, 12-9-2009) by Channel 3, ABC-TV in Winchester, VA.jtrnr1951 Thanks this.
