I've seen enough nightmare stories about putting all the faith in GPS and hope to avoid adding my own story to the pile so I'm looking for a good atlas. Any opinion on the Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas?

That’s the one you want. I’d get the Deluxe version, however. I like the ring binding; easier to keep on page.
This one:

the paper one comes out every year with updates to the dot laws and rules in the front.
Speed_Drums, tscottme and Sir Grouch Thank this. -
Nice. Will definitely go for that one. Spiral binding and laminated. Getting all stylish and fancy

It's 'the bible'. Get one. Whilebthe Rand McNally GPS have the same map pages of the paper atlas, it's fairly clumsy to use your GPS to view the MC atlas pages. The RM MC A has valuable info for each state, like truck restricted routes, low bridges, etc. I find the best use ofbthe atlas to be seeing the big picture of the state & area in context. I used the Chicago city map in the atlas to choose which of the nearby CAT scales was an easier route.
I suggest you buy the paper, not more expensive laminated version, and replace it every other year, if not yearly. It only cost about $15-19. Toward the end of the year they can be had for about $10.Sir Grouch and Numb Thank this. -
If you use it often you'll probably pull a page or two out of the spiral-bound. Also the huge gap for the binding is often where you need important map detail of the map. It can be twice as expensive and it's about 3 times as thick as the more widely used paper version.Sir Grouch Thanks this.

Some newbies accidentally buy the Rand McNally Atlas that is meant for cars. They ahould make sure they buy the Motor Carrier Atlas.Moosetek13 and Numb Thank this.
