Hello y’all I’m new to the forum. I have a question…. I just bought a 2014 western star 4900sb. To start off my brake lights work normal and both turn signals work normal with or with out the brakes on.
I noticed if I have my hazards on and press the brake petal my hazards stop flashing and stay solid. When I release the brake pedal they start flashing again. Messing around with my test light I have figured out when my hazards are on they are feeding on to my brake light line. so naturally when I press the pedal it now gives constant power to the hazards. I have check all the fuses I can find but I’m not sure how to find this problem.
I would love to hear any thoughts or solutions y’all might have.
I haul fuel for a living so I need to figure this out cause I need to be able to have my hazards on while stopping for RR tracks.
Thank you for any advice.

If you are probing you test light at the tail lights know that there are only 3 wires. Ground, clearance and stop/turn. Turn and stop feed through the same wire.
Other than that little useless information I'm not much help. Other than check your ground wires. A missing or bad ground can do funny things -
On older stuff with the signal stat turn signal switch on the column the override of brake lights by the turn/4 ways occurs in that switch. So the brake light signal goes into that switch from the brake air sendor, and then out of that switch to brake lights. When the turn signal or hazards are on different contacts make the connection. I'm not explaining this well, but it may be as simple as installing a new turn signal switch.
I'm with Lester on checking grounds, and I have no idea where this is done on your WS, but it would be worth testing the wires in and out of your turn signal switch if you can locate the pigtails going to it.spsauerland, Roger McG and lester Thank this. -
Thanks for that explanation oxbow, I thought that all happened in the signal stat but wasn't sure. A 14 may have some sort of module but thats way newer than my stuff.
If ALL of your blinkers and clearance lights are working I wouldn't expect a ground issue. But if you have any lights not working fix them first. I've often had blinkers act strange and It is almost always a broken ground wire.spsauerland, Roger McG and Oxbow Thank this. -
All the 73-87 Chevy pickups did this exact thing .
I think it’s based on where the brake light power feeds into the harness , if it’s after the turn signal switch , then it over rides the turn signal .spsauerland and Oxbow Thank this. -
Maybe that's just the way his Western Star is wired and nothing is wrong?spsauerland and Magoo1968 Thank this. -
Does this happen on truck and trailer?
Disconnect pigtail, checking to see if problem is in tractor or trailer.
Disconnect all tail lights and check wire harness. Could be a short in a tail light.
My first guess is a grounding issue. -
So your front and side turn lights stay on solid with the brake pressed also?
spsauerland Thanks this. -
I'm looking thru my notes and can't find it.
Take the bottom cover off the signal stat.
If I remember right, there is a red wire that you need to cut and that will cure the problem.
There is a tech bulletin on this.
This will fix the problem.
I'll keep looking for it.spsauerland, Roger McG and Oxbow Thank this. -
DONT CUT THE RED WIRE!!!!!!
