I just started at R&L carriers so don't have a real measure to weigh against, bit I have some friends who work at a small XPO barn about an hour south of me that claims freight is dry for them currently.
Most day drivers are punching out between 2:30 and 5 pm (with start times between 9 & 10 am). They only have 5 or 6 night line guys, and it's not uncommon for half or more to be told to stay home some nights due to a lack of trailers going out.
Is this a common XPO trend or is this likely just issues with this specifically small yard (14 or 15 total drivers)?
Just curious, as I had considered driving for them before I signed on with R&L..
Thanks

The XPO barn I'm at is located in the Southeastern portion of Idaho. Fairly rural by most standards, but we have been steadily busy for the last couple of years by my account. Usually the freight volume seems to run in cycles, and there have been periodic slowdowns in the past. This doesn't seem to be the case for us anymore, it's either steady, or balls to the wall freight nowadays. In fact our driver and dockworker staffing has increased nearly twofold since 2015. I understand our larger hubs have been falling behind in their work due to various issues with Covid and the labor shortage. By my reckoning the freight is far from dry, at least in our region of the US...

I'm at OD and we're buried in freight and can't hire drivers. Monday morning we had just under 600 outbound loads in the yard.

Freight is down for most barns. Customers tired of destroyed freight, missing freight, getting there days late, etc. Been here over 20 years, this management has been the worst I’ve ever seen. Totally doesn’t give a crap about customer service. It’s all about the stock price.

I’ve been getting 17-20 stops just about every day for the last 5 years. We certainly have plenty to do.
Our biggest problem is finding at least semi-competent drivers. It takes THREE of this new breed to replace one decent peddle hand.Texas_hwy_287, HiramKingWilliams, The Shadow and 2 others Thank this. -
They have lowered the bar for some and raised it for those who can handle it. The problem with that is, the good drivers get burned out eventually and quit or bid to linehaul runs.Gearjammin' Penguin and MACK E-6 Thank this. -
