So, I’m getting back into the truck (hopefully) after a couple years off. I lost my last trucking job in July of 2019. I’mlooking to get back in a truck, have applied to about 6 or 7 companies, and only one is offering me the job. Took a drug screen last Friday and today they’re expecting an answer about whether I’ll take the job. My 3 years driving experience with a couple of minor slow maneuver accidents plus my 2 years out of a truck is presenting challenges. As a family man, I was hoping for something local or regional, but this job, which does pay well, is OTR, 2 home for every 10 out. I’m looking for advice on whether I should take it. I need the money, and if I knew for sure that this was all I could get for now, I’d definitely take it. But, I’m not sure it’s all I can get. Problem is, I don’t want to turn them down and then find out I needed to take it because no one else will hire me. And the longer I go without driving a truck, the harder that gets. So, what do y’all think? Details about the job: very small power only company called Sunray Transport doing terminal to terminal UPS freight. They say $72k per year but they are kind of weird about explaining whether that’s a salary or cpm or what when I asked. He said “it works out to about $0.65 per mile”. It’s definitely OTR, so I’d imagine it’s cpm, but I’m not positive. No PTO, but they shut down every year from Christmas to New Year’s so I’d have that time off. Standard benefits. Well-equipped trucks. All opinions welcomed and appreciated.

That’s the thing about being a responsible for ones choices. You and only you can make that decision.
people can tell you what ever they want on here, they will in fact tell you companies are hiring like crazy and you’ll find a job. However they aren’t in your shoes and can’t experience your urgency to get a job. If 6-7 you applied and only 1 called back should tell you how hireable you are. -
Where is your location? May be some local work available that pays well.

You may have the current offer, but do some more research first.Eddiec Thanks this. -
If you need a job....want to start driving again....I would take the job and stick around for at least a year. You will need some recent experience.....WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING, in order to make yourself more attractive to a larger pool of companies. They are willing to take a chance on you. I say go for it. Some Fed Ex contractors are better than others. I think 65-75K is in the ballpark. There are lots of worse jobs out here! Good luck!

if it's this place, https://sunraytransport.com/, it looks like it may be a good gig. power only, means you haul someones trailer wherever. your case is terminal to terminal. parking worries are somewhat taken of on each end and usually 24 hr operation.
central Fla sometimes doesn't have many options I've heard.Chinatown Thanks this. -

UPS trailers will probably be in pretty good condition and they aren't likely to be heavy. No customer/broker headaches either.
I would go for it. Not many OTR places will get you home 2 days for every 10 out. -
Only you no how hungry your family is, and how close to homeless you are. IE how bad you need the job.
I say if nothing else comes along this week, TAKE IT.
Once you are out of your current situation. Wife will be used to getting a check every week, AND hate you being gone. In 6 months in decide what YOU want to do.Last edited: Oct 11, 2021
