Currently in Phoenix, AZ with hopes to move to Tennessee but as many say above “know what you’re getting into” my plan was to keep the apartment for training and have someone check in on the cats till I got my own truck and first hand experience of OTR before I make the jump and ditch the apartment but #### Arizona got expensive quick!

    Boondock Thanks this.

When I started school at mister p I did not have to have any money for school. I did sign paperwork if I stayed on with them for a year after completing school the rest of my schooling would be forgiven. So once I got my license they took 50.00 a week out of my check for the year and that’s all I had to pay. I stayed with the company approx 1 yr and 3 months then found something closer to home.

I'm from Tennessee; nice town just North of Nashville. Twenty minute drive to downtown Nashville.
    Shaffer hires Tennessee drivers.
Mr. P Express probably does also.

If they are in your area, go find a union ltl. Some now take students. Some start you on the dock. Put your time in and forget the otr general frieght.

Another issue to consider is having a domicile in a state with no personal income taxes, so you can keep more of your paycheck.
Tennessee has no personal income taxes, but does have high sales taxes.
Texas, Florida, South Dakota also have no state income taxes.
Can get a legal address in Texas, Florida, South Dakota through Escapees RV Club. This club will also take care of your mail and many OTR drivers use that benefit.

Most of the mega companies do not like it when you idle the truck for long periods of time, you will need to idle when it's hot outside and when the temperature goes below, say 20 degrees F, to keep the fuel from gelling up the works. Every driver has this parameter, it's called your "idle percentage" and if it gets too high your DM must get on you about it. Not that he wants to, but it's his job to manage you and make you "efficient" in the eyes of the company.

Most companies have inverters in the trucks these days, if not I wouldn't even consider them, as they are probably a dirt bag, penny pinching company that could care less about driver comfort. Then again, a first time driver is going to learn to eat a lot of crap and love doing it, or you won't last long. It's just the rules of the game, for what it's worth. These companies know that with no experience, they can manipulate you to a certain degree and you will tolerate it, to a point of course.

I always tried to hang out in the drivers lounge, but those days are over due to the released bio-weapon they call covid. I havn't driven in 11 months, so I'm not certain if the lounges are opened up. As I reflect on it now, I probably would have been better off not caring so much about idling the truck. Loyalty to a company is often a one way street, if there is even such a concept as loyalty these days.

As others have said, living in a closet can make you just plain crazy after a short time. You need to get away from the truck at some point and exercise a bit and eat a good meal. Being in the truck all the time is not even comfortable, so you have to get away from it, you need room to stretch and have a change of scenery. It really is a lifestyle without much of a life.

I talked to a driver that has been living in the truck for 7 years.
His domicile address and mail service is through Escapees RV Club at an RV resort.
